Cambridge United vs Blackpool Prediction: Harris Side to Grind Out Narrow Victory

Tactical breakdown and score prediction for Cambridge United against Blackpool in League One on 10 October 2026.

How Cambridge United and Blackpool compare on rating, form and history.

Cambridge United host Blackpool at the Abbey Stadium on 10 October 2026. Cambridge sit sixth on 13 points from eight games and are unbeaten in seven across all competitions, their only league blemish a 1-1 draw at AFC Wimbledon on 26 September. Blackpool are 15th on eight points from seven games and have gone four league matches without a win, though they have still netted 13 goals in those seven outings. The goals against column tells the real story.

Neil Harris took charge at Cambridge on 19 February 2025, while Ian Evatt replaced Steve Bruce at Blackpool on 21 October 2025. Their direct record offers nothing useful yet, so this one comes down to personnel and circumstance.

Cambridge have done what Harris sides tend to do: concede sparingly, find goals through dead balls and stay competitive when things are not quite clicking, which is often more telling than a comfortable win. Blackpool's inconsistency is harder to ignore and though the 0-0 at Notts County on 26 September showed they can frustrate, four defensive injuries have made an already difficult situation considerably worse.

Harris has Callum Stead (ankle) and Shane McLoughlin (calf) as doubts. Blackpool's situation is far more serious: Josh Earl, Niall Ennis, Fraser Horsfall and Michael Ihiekwe are all ruled out, leaving Evatt to reassemble his back line from whatever is left standing.

Cambridge typically set up in a 4-2-3-1 that prioritises defensive shape, with the midfield pair protecting the back line while giving the attacking players room to operate. Dead balls are where they do their damage, with Zak Bradshaw already scoring one this season at Wimbledon. Ben Knight's three league goals make him the obvious threat against a reshuffled Blackpool defence, while Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu controls the tempo in midfield.

Blackpool under Evatt press high and try to win the ball in advanced areas, with Jerry Yates and Tom Bloxham as the forward outlets and Josh Bowler as an option on the flank. Without four defenders, though, they cannot press with the same intensity for 90 minutes. The energy cost is too high when rotating inexperienced cover and if the press breaks down, Cambridge will have the space and Knight and Mpanzu to make them pay.

If Stead and McLoughlin both miss out, Harris may simply invite Blackpool on and hit them on the counter. Evatt's response might be to push more bodies down Bowler's flank but without experienced centre backs to hold the shape, those gaps could quickly become expensive.

This fixture has produced some chaotic results lately: a 4-4 draw at Cambridge in August 2024, a 2-1 Blackpool win in March 2025, a 1-0 Blackpool win in April 2024 and a 2-1 Cambridge win in December 2023. Cambridge have won just one of the last 11 meetings across all competitions, so Blackpool hold the historical edge, though Blackpool cannot defend the way they did in that 4-4 game and Cambridge have no obvious reason to open up.

Cambridge's dead ball threat is the obvious danger for a Blackpool side missing four defenders and now tasked with defending set pieces without the bodies they would normally rely on. Blackpool will still create chances going forward but their inability to keep clean sheets means one moment of Cambridge quality should be enough. A Knight header from a corner feels like the likeliest source of the only goal.

Cambridge United 1-0 Blackpool. A back line held together with string will struggle to contain what Cambridge can produce from dead balls and there is nothing in Blackpool's current form to suggest they will outscore the problem.
