How Milton Keynes Dons and Luton Town compare on rating, form and history.

MK Dons host Luton Town at Stadium MK on 17 October 2026 in a League One fixture that matters far more to the home side. Eight games in and still without a win, Warne's men sit 23rd with six points, all from draws and the question of when that first victory arrives is starting to feel urgent. Luton arrive in 13th or 14th on 11 points with little to worry about, though Jack Wilshere will want to build on the Wycombe performance.

MK Dons' last five league games produced nothing but draws and defeats, the worst of them a 1-5 home thrashing by Reading on 10 October. That scoreline laid bare defensive problems Warne hasn't been able to fix and with the squad short on confidence, there's little to suggest a quick turnaround. Luton come in off a 4-1 win at Wycombe on the same date, making it the clearest indication yet that Wilshere's side can score freely when the space opens up. Their broader run has been mixed, with three wins and three losses from eight games but the manner of the Wycombe result carries more weight than the numbers alone.

Warne is missing Kane Wilson (long term knee injury) and Ryan Barnett (at least four more weeks out), both of whom operate on the right side. Losing both at once strips width from the attack and leaves that flank exposed defensively with only makeshift cover available. Wilshere is without Gideon Kodua, who had hamstring surgery and won't be back until the new year. Kodua would have offered something different wide but Luton have enough forward options to absorb the loss without altering their shape.

MK Dons have leaned on set pieces and quick counters all season but opponents keep finding joy down their defensive channels and the absences of Wilson and Barnett make the right side even more vulnerable than usual. Aaron Collins is the main threat in attack with around six league goals already to his name, though he tends to go quiet when service dries up.

Luton under Wilshere want to move the ball forward quickly and Nahki Wells, with more than five league goals, gives them a presence up front who can hold the ball. Without Kodua they may lean more on central combinations, though the core intent is unlikely to shift. The contest between Luton's forward line and a MK Dons defensive structure that has been porous all season, particularly in the gap between midfield and the back four, looks like the one that decides the game. With Wilson and Barnett both out and MK Dons' right channel already the most exploited part of their defence this season, Luton have a clear route in. Warne will probably set up compact and try to hit on the break through Collins but the bigger question is how much damage Luton can do before that becomes relevant.

Recent meetings between these sides are limited, though Luton have generally had the better of them, including a 3-0 win in the 2018 EFL Trophy. From the last three meetings, Luton took one win and two draws.

Set pieces are probably MK Dons' best route to a goal and Luton will need to stay alert to them. The more telling factor, though, is psychological: Luton can play without pressure from mid table, while MK Dons' winless run creates exactly the kind of tension that leads to rushed decisions in possession, which tends to suit visiting teams.

Luton to win 2-1. MK Dons are hard to beat in the sense that they rarely lose by heavy margins and Collins could easily nick one from a set piece or a counter but a side that put four past Wycombe should find chances here and Wells is well-placed to exploit that weakened right channel. MK Dons' wait for a first win goes on.
