League One leaders Plymouth Argyle host fourth-placed Huddersfield Town in a high-stakes clash where injuries and form will shape a potential goal-fest.

How Plymouth Argyle and Huddersfield Town compare on rating, form and history.

Plymouth welcome Huddersfield to Home Park on 17 October 2026 for a League One gameweek 11 meeting with top of the table stakes and three points here could narrow what is currently a three point gap to nothing. Plymouth sit first after 10 games with 19 points and a +6 goal difference, while Huddersfield are fourth after nine matches on 16 points with a +7 goal difference and a game in hand. Both sides arrive with serious injury lists that will force considerable tactical improvisation.

This is the first competitive meeting between Tom Cleverley and Martin Drury. Cleverley took charge at Plymouth on 13 June 2025, replacing Miron Muslic, while Drury was appointed at Huddersfield on 27 May 2026, replacing Liam Manning. The tactical matchup, with no head to head record to draw on, has to be judged through what each side has shown so far this season.

Plymouth arrive in good rhythm, posting a W-W-L-W-W sequence across their last five. Wins over AFC Wimbledon (2-1 on 10 October 2026) and Leyton Orient (2-0 on 3 October 2026) continued a run of five league games without conceding more than one goal at home, though a 1-0 defeat at Burton on 26 September showed that defensive lapses remain a risk.

Huddersfield's last five read D-W-L-D-D. A 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday on 10 October was followed by the 3-1 win at Burton on 3 October, their heaviest winning margin of the season. Their only league defeat came at Bromley on 19 September, a 2-1 loss that sits awkwardly against one defeat in nine league games overall.

Plymouth are without four players: Malachi Boateng (knee), Michael Baidoo (Achilles), Julio Pleguezuelo (injury) and Owen Oseni (injury), thinning out defensive cover and midfield options considerably. Huddersfield are in significantly worse shape, with Murray Wallace out for around eight weeks with a knee problem, Ryan Ledson missing the match with an elbow injury, Jack Whatmough unavailable with a calf problem, Marcus McGuane long term absent and Herbie Kane sidelined. Losing five players across the back line and midfield forces Martin Drury to rebuild his entire defensive unit and central midfield from scratch.

Plymouth are expected to set up in a 4-2-3-1, with Aribim Pepple available at the top of it though his minutes may be managed after returning from an absence and Will Evans offering support alongside him. Bradley Ibrahim has been strong in midfield all season and, with Boateng out, becomes even more central to controlling tempo. Huddersfield will likely drop deeper given the injury situation, looking to soak up pressure and spring Joe Taylor on the counter. Taylor has been prolific early in the season and is Huddersfield's best chance of scoring, so his threat on the break is real regardless of scoreline.

The core tactical question is whether Huddersfield can keep enough structure in midfield without Ledson and McGuane. If they cannot, Plymouth's midfield, led by Ibrahim, will have room to dictate tempo. But Plymouth's own defensive absences leave them exposed to exactly the kind of rapid transition that Taylor thrives on.

The two most recent meetings split evenly, with Plymouth winning 3-1 at home on 21 March 2026 before Huddersfield winning 3-1 away on 8 November 2025. Both previous meetings ended 3-1, with four goals in each, though two games is too small a sample to call it a pattern.

Set pieces could be decisive here, given that Huddersfield have scored from dead balls this season and Plymouth are missing defensive personnel. Aerial duels at corners and free kicks are a concern for the hosts, who will need to be well organised in those moments while also trying to use their own routines to expose Huddersfield's reshuffled back line. Plymouth have home advantage, the better recent form and a league leading position but Cleverley's side will need to handle a Huddersfield team that has barely lost all season. Derek Adams was appointed Plymouth's permanent Sporting Director on 15 October 2026, though what matters more immediately is what happens on the pitch.

The prediction is 3-3. Plymouth's front line, with Pepple available and Evans alongside him, should find space against a reshuffled Huddersfield defence but Huddersfield's set piece danger, Taylor's quality on the break and their ability to come from behind (as they showed at Sheffield Wednesday) make a Plymouth win without conceding look unlikely. The last two meetings both finished 3-1 to the home side and with both teams short handed defensively, if Huddersfield's dead ball delivery starts finding heads in the box, Plymouth's lead could evaporate more than once.
