Ligue 1 returns on 22 August 2026 with OGC Nice hosting FC Lorient in what looks like a measured, low key opener, made slightly stranger by the fact that the two new managers essentially swapped clubs over the summer. Direct meetings between Pantaloni and Dujeux as rival managers are basically non-existent. Pantaloni took charge at Nice on 17 June 2026 after replacing Claude Puel, Dujeux was appointed at Lorient on 9 June. Both men know the other's previous environment well, which may give each a small edge when reading in game adjustments, though how much that actually matters on the day is anyone's guess.

Pantaloni is expected to set up Nice in a 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1, a shape that blends defensive compactness with quick transitions. Jonathan Clauss operates on the right as an attacking wing back, his overlapping runs and early crosses the most predictable and most dangerous outlet in Pantaloni's system and Nice will lean on possession rather than high intensity pressing without Abergel's combative presence in the middle. Dujeux favours a pragmatic 4-4-2 at Lorient with Aiyegun Tosin leading the line and Jean-Victor Makengo sitting in front of the back four. Kamara's absence forces a reshuffle in goal and disrupts distribution from the back, thereby placing even more responsibility on Makengo to shield the defence and keep Lorient organised in transitions. Tosin's movement behind Nice's back three is the most likely source of danger if Lorient get the space to run at them.
Dujeux knows Nice's system better than most opposing coaches will this season, having just spent time inside that environment and the midfield contest is where that familiarity may show. Nice's wing backs push high but Lorient's 4-4-2 sits in a mid block and invites pressure onto them, conceding the flanks to protect the central channel. Clauss against Lorient's left sided defenders is the individual duel worth watching most closely, his runs from the right wing back position will likely produce the clearest chances of the afternoon, if they materialise at all.
Nice have the better of the historical record, winning around 18 of 42 meetings to Lorient's 9, though a 3-3 draw in February 2026 is a decent reminder that the overall numbers flatter Nice more than the recent pattern suggests. Nice's system gives Clauss plenty of opportunities to whip early crosses in from the right but Lorient's disciplined 4-4-2 is well drilled at defending them and with Abergel and Kamara both absent, neither side has its usual aerial presence at set pieces anyway.
0-0. New systems, significant absentees, season opener caution: it all points the same direction. Nice's best route to goal runs through Clauss but without Abergel they will struggle to win second balls in the middle third. Lorient, sitting deep in Dujeux's 4-4-2 and content to counter through Tosin and Makengo, are built for exactly this kind of game. Neither side showed much in front of goal during pre season and there is no obvious reason to expect that to change in a match where both coaches know exactly what the other is trying to build.
