How Celta Vigo and Real Betis compare on rating, form and history.

Real Betis travel to Balaídos on 25 October 2026 for a La Liga matchday 10 fixture three days after European action for both sides. Celta sit eighth with 11 points from nine games while Betis are fourth on 19 and, with first place only a handful of points further ahead, dropping anything here reopens the table above them and puts their Champions League spot under real pressure.

Neither manager has faced the other before. Claudio Giráldez, who took over at Celta in March 2024, lines up against Rubi, who came in at Betis in October 2026 following Manuel Pellegrini's departure. Both sides lean toward possession football and with squad depth tested by a midweek schedule, the fatigue angle is probably more relevant than anything tactical.

Two back to back 2-1 wins for Celta, against Alavés in the league and Celtic in Europe, suggest a team that grinds things out rather than dazzles, which is fine until fatigue catches up with legs that have been working hard midweek. Betis's recent run is harder to read: they beat Feyenoord 1-0 in the Champions League around 21 October, showing they can manage a game when they need to but the 5-2 defeat to Barcelona on 17 October raises genuine questions about how they hold up when teams press them high and that inconsistency has not gone away.

Celta are without Carl Starfelt and Álvaro Núñez through injury, which matters in a back three that relies on Starfelt as the organising centre half. Giráldez will need to shuffle and hope whoever slots in doesn't get caught in transitions. Betis have the longer injury list, with Junior Firpo out with a muscle or groin issue while Cucho Hernández misses with a calf problem and Héctor Bellerín is also sidelined. Losing both full backs hurts badly and Rubi will need to reshape his system to compensate, though Isco functions as a kind of cheat code in tight spaces regardless of who else is available, which is the one part of Betis's attack that doesn't rely on width.

Celta typically build from the back in a 3-4-3 shape and without Starfelt may start deeper than usual, content to let Betis have the ball while waiting to spring Iago Aspas in behind. Betis's wide options are thinner than Rubi would like, so expect Isco to get more of the ball in central half spaces, which is probably fine since Isco thriving in tight areas is not a new problem for La Liga defenders. Abde Ezzalzouli offers pace on the break and if Celta's wing backs push into the final third and leave space in behind, Betis are well placed to hurt them on the counter. Celta's Europa League win over Celtic will have taken something out of them and Betis's Feyenoord game was controlled enough that they may arrive fresher, which matters when legs tire in the second half.

Betis have not won any of their last five visits to Balaídos and the fixture tends to finish level, with Celta holding Betis to draws in their last three home meetings by sitting deep and hitting Aspas on the break. That pattern does not shift based on league position and it is the main reason this is not a straightforward away win on paper.

Both defences are short handed, so set pieces are worth watching. Celta's reshuffled back line could be vulnerable to deliveries at the near post, while Betis without their full backs may struggle to defend wide free kicks and corners.

Isco and the midfield quality retained despite the absences are enough to edge this for Betis, who take it 2-1, though it will not be comfortable. Celta will probably take the lead, Aspas at home creating something from a set piece or a transition and they will believe they can hold it. Betis should level before half time through a midfield combination or something Isco manufactures and the winner comes later when Celta's wing backs push into the final third and leave the space Betis need. Five visits to Balaídos without a win keeps the doubt alive but the balance of quality points one way.
