The central worry for Bolton is how quickly their new recruits can function as a unit and there are enough first time combinations in the starting XI to make that a real test from the opening whistle. Heckingbottom's Preston are well organised in their back three shape and the midfield contest between Watson and Sheehan against Thompson and McCann looks like the game's defining battle, with Hardie and Dalby needing to get the better of Lindsay and Hughes to open things up. Gale's ability to test Offiah and Valentin wide could be Bolton's most direct route to goal and the derby atmosphere combined with both squads' unsettled pre season form points to a low scoring game where neither side will want to open up early.
Across recent meetings, Preston have the better of it with three wins to Bolton's two from the last half dozen fixtures, most of the rest ending in draws. Goals have been fairly even at around eight for Bolton and nine for Preston across that run. Bolton hold a slight overall historical edge but the recent trend leans toward narrow Preston wins or stalemates.
Preston's set piece delivery is an area Bolton's new back line has not yet been examined on and the 12:30pm kick off is early enough to strip some sharpness from both sides, which does nothing to help squads already short of competitive rhythm.
