ELO head-to-head

How Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund compare on rating, form and history.

Bayern Munich host Borussia Dortmund at the Allianz Arena on 31 October 2026, Matchday 8 of the Bundesliga, with both sides level on 17 points and unbeaten. Bayern sit first on goal difference, so a home win opens up a meaningful gap while doing real damage to Dortmund's early season confidence under Niko Kovac. The timing is awkward: Vincent Kompany is sidelined by illness, leaving Aaron Danks to take charge in his first competitive game in the role.

Kovac knows this fixture intimately from his time managing Bayern, which should give Dortmund a clearer tactical blueprint than most visiting sides arrive with. Danks is stepping into it cold, though a 3-1 league win at Freiburg followed by a 6-1 DFB Pokal thrashing of Magdeburg at least shows Bayern do not collapse when Kompany is absent.

Bayern come in having won four and drawn one of their last five league games, with a +19 goal difference across those fixtures and a 3-1 away win at Freiburg on 25 October as the most recent result. Dortmund are the only side in the division who can match Bayern's unbeaten record, going five wins and two draws through seven games, the last a 1-0 win at Eintracht Frankfurt on 24 October that owed plenty to their defensive organisation.

Bayern are missing Manuel Neuer, Jamal Musiala, Luis Diaz (hamstring, due back late November), Joshua Kimmich (personal reasons), Aleksandar Pavlovic and Kim Min-jae, while Dortmund are without Emre Can (cruciate, targeting mid November) and Giannis Konstantelias. Can's absence is damaging: his role as the midfield's physical anchor, winning second balls and covering ground between the lines, is not easily replaced and whoever steps in has to cover significantly more ground to maintain the shape that frustrated Frankfurt.

Bayern's possession heavy game will need some improvisation given the personnel gaps. Olise has been the standout performer this season with six or more goal contributions already and his directness in one on one situations may well be what decides this. With Musiala and Kimmich both out, Olise carries more of the creative burden, with set pieces doing the work that Musiala's link up play between the lines usually handles. Kane's movement without the ball could be ruthlessly exploited if Dortmund drop into a low block, which they almost certainly will.

Dortmund have five clean sheets from seven games, the best defensive record in the division and Kovac will set up to make Bayern work for every opening, sitting deep, denying space in behind and attacking on the counter through Guirassy, while Jobe Bellingham runs the midfield. Whether Bayern can isolate Kane against a single defender quickly enough is one of the central questions, as is whether Dortmund can get Guirassy into transition situations before Bayern's defence gets organised. Olise against Dortmund's full backs is the other battle worth watching, if he can hold his position high and wide to stop Dortmund sitting in a flat mid block.

That 4-0 hammering in one of the most recent Bundesliga meetings sits in the background and Dortmund's record at the Allianz Arena is poor by any measure. Kovac's knowledge of how Bayern set up at home means Dortmund are less likely to be caught high and exposed on the break, which is how they have conceded in previous visits. Set pieces matter more than usual given how much creative quality Bayern are missing, with their delivery from corners and wide free kicks needing to compensate for the absence of Musiala's improvisation, while Dortmund's own aerial ability gives them a chance from second phases. Danks will almost certainly go for continuity rather than anything experimental.

Bayern Munich 2-0 Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund's five clean sheets tell you Kovac will prioritise the shape over chasing the game but that approach has never produced a result at the Allianz Arena. Guirassy in behind is dangerous enough that Bayern's defensive cover will matter, especially with Kim Min-jae out, yet Olise's ability to create from wide positions and Kane's movement in the box should be enough to break down Dortmund's defensive block. A two goal win keeps Bayern in front at the top heading into the November international break.
