Real Betis host Malaga at the Estadio Benito Villamarin on 31 October 2026, a Matchday 11 La Liga fixture with little suspense on paper. Betis sit fourth with 20 points from ten matches and are pushing for Champions League qualification, while Malaga are bottom with five points and no league wins all season.
Manuel Pellegrini has been in charge at Betis since August 2020, long enough to have built a coherent tactical identity and a squad shaped around his ideas, whereas Juan Francisco Funes only took over at Malaga in November 2025 and hasn't faced Pellegrini's side in a competitive match yet. There is no head to head record between the two managers but the experience gap is substantial and favours the Chilean.

Betis arrive having drawn 0-0 at Celta Vigo on 25 October to end a mixed run of results, with their last five league games reading W-D-W-L-D. Malaga's form is more troubling, with D-L-D-L-D across their last five and a 1-1 draw at Alavés on 23 October as their most recent outing. A 3-0 Copa del Rey win over Alcázar gave the squad something to point to but cup football against lower league opposition says little about what they can produce against a side of Betis's level.
Betis are without Junior Firpo, Cucho Hernández and Facundo Bernal, thereby losing a full back, a striker and a midfielder in one go. Malaga have it considerably worse, with six players unavailable through injury: Diego Murillo, Aarón Ochoa, Joaquín Muñoz, Pablo Martínez, Juan Cruz and Julen Lobete are all sidelined, leaving Funes short of options in defence and without several of his regular wide players.
Pellegrini's Betis push their full backs high to stretch the pitch and move the ball quickly to the flanks, where Antony and Abde Ezzalzouli receive early on the outside and drive at full backs in one on one situations. Isco operates as the central creator, comfortable unpicking compact defensive blocks, while Pablo Fornals and Dani Ceballos screen possession and switch play from deeper in midfield.

Malaga will likely defend in a low block with two compact lines, with Adrián Niño as their best bet on the counter and David Larrubia, Carlos Dotor and Dani Lorenzo in midfield behind him. Without the six injured players they simply don't have the depth to hold their shape for 90 minutes. Antony running at their left flank from early on is the likeliest source of overloads and the combination of Antony isolating that side and Abde cutting in from the right is one a reserve backline will struggle to handle across a full game. Isco finding Abde in half spaces is probably the most dangerous combination on the pitch.
3-0 to Betis. This is the first top flight meeting between the clubs since 2018 and while the historical record favours the home side, the table, the injury list and the form record have already made the argument. Fornals and Ceballos should win second balls and prevent Malaga's midfield from getting any time on the ball, while Isco creates and the combination of Antony isolating the left side and Abde cutting in from the right gives a reserve backline almost no way to survive 90 minutes intact. Malaga have threatened so little offensively this season that a clean sheet seems the likeliest outcome.
