Burnley vs Portsmouth Prediction: New Coach Faces Tough Test at Turf Moor

In-depth tactical preview and 0-0 score prediction for Burnley vs Portsmouth in the Championship on 31 October 2026.

ELO head-to-head

How Burnley and Portsmouth compare on rating, form and history.

Burnley host Portsmouth at Turf Moor on 31 October 2026 in a Championship fixture that could hardly come at a worse time for the home side, sitting 22nd with eight points from 12 games, rooted in the bottom three and without a home win in 21 matches. Saturday is Fabio Celestini's first game in charge, having replaced Nicky Hayen on 28 October. Portsmouth arrive in 11th with 18 points, unbeaten in their last four or five league outings and pushing toward the play offs.

Celestini has no record against Portsmouth, which genuinely complicates any attempt to predict how he will set up. Mousinho has been in charge since January 2023 and has faced Burnley before, though two meetings is far too small a sample to draw anything useful from.

Burnley's last five league games went L L D W D: a 4-1 defeat to Lincoln City, a 2-1 loss to Wolves, a 2-2 draw with Charlton, a 4-0 win over Watford and a 1-1 draw with Derby. Portsmouth have gone W D W in recent games, losing just once in their last eight, with wins over Millwall (2-1) and Norwich (1-0) and a draw with Wolves (1-1). Portsmouth have lost once in eight and sit five points off the top six with games in hand, Burnley have taken one point from their last six. That is the actual distance between these two sides.

Neither side reports key absences, so Turf Moor's only real headline is Celestini's arrival and what he will demand of a squad that has been trying to find its footing since dropping out of the Premier League. Mousinho's tenure has brought stability to Portsmouth, 11th place is modest but they have been harder to beat than that suggests.

Burnley's set piece problems have been among the more consistent things about them this season, which is not a compliment. Without a home win in over a year, they have simply failed to score enough to win, the 21 game run speaks for itself. Celestini's first priority is almost certainly the defence, though with no sessions yet under his belt, what shape that actually looks like on Saturday is genuinely unknown. He is inheriting a side that shipped four goals to Lincoln City last week.

Burnley will almost certainly look not to lose before they look to win. Portsmouth hold their shape and wait for mistakes rather than forcing the issue. The central battle is Burnley's ability to build from the back against Portsmouth's pressing, give it away cheaply in the first phase and the home defence, already vulnerable from set pieces, is immediately exposed. There may be space in behind a stretched Burnley midfield for Portsmouth to exploit on the break, though neither side is currently built to open the other up with any regularity.

Burnley have won one and drawn one of their last two league meetings with Portsmouth, a 2-1 win in September 2024 and a 0-0 draw in February 2025. Both results came when Burnley were in far better shape than they are now, which makes them a shaky basis for prediction.

Set pieces are the most obvious danger for Burnley and if the game is goalless heading into the second half, that is likely where it gets decided. A home side desperate for a result may push forward late and open space for Portsmouth's counter attacking structure. A squad that has not won at home in 21 games does not need added pressure, they are already living in it.

0-0 is the bet. Celestini will not want to lose his first game in charge, Portsmouth have no reason to take risks on an unbeaten run and Burnley need to shore up a defence that has conceded in bulk. The specific stakes only reinforce the caution: Burnley need points to escape the bottom three while Portsmouth need nothing from this game to stay on course for the play offs. Celestini has had no time to implement an attacking shape, Portsmouth's defensive record on the road is solid and a home crowd watching a 21 game winless run does not exactly create the conditions for free flowing football.
