How Middlesbrough and Lincoln City compare on rating, form and history.

The 2026/27 Championship season opens at the Riverside Stadium on 15 August at 15:00 UK time, with Middlesbrough hosting newly promoted Lincoln City. Both clubs start on zero points but that's where the similarities end. Middlesbrough come in as promotion contenders after reaching the play off semi finals last season, now under new manager Kim Hellberg, whereas Lincoln are League One champions with 103 points from 2025/26 who face an immediate question about whether their game translates a division higher. The subplot writes itself too: Hellberg makes his competitive debut in English football against two co head coaches in Cohen and Shaw who are themselves only three months into the job.

There's no managerial history between Hellberg and Lincoln's dugout. Hellberg arrived in England in November 2025 after leaving Hammarby, while Cohen and Shaw only took charge in May 2026 following Michael Skubala's exit, so both setups arrive at the Riverside as strangers to each other. Middlesbrough's recent form, meanwhile, pulls in two directions: a 1-0 Carabao Cup win over Wrexham in August is encouraging but a 0-1 loss to Hull in the Championship play off final and a 2-1 aggregate exit to Southampton before that are harder to set aside. Lincoln, by contrast, went unbeaten through the final stretch of their League One season, victories accumulating as 103 points confirmed the title. Whether that confidence survives its first taste of Championship football is the only question worth asking about them right now.

Middlesbrough have a few fitness concerns to manage. Tommy Conway is carrying an ankle issue, Aidan Morris is 50/50 with a leg problem and David Strelec remains doubtful with a muscle complaint, while Riley McGree, Alfie Jones and Myles Peart-Harris have all trained fully. New goalkeeper Radek Vitek could make his debut among likely starters that include Callum Brittain, Adilson Malanda, Max Arfsten, Sebastian Berhalter, Morgan Whittaker, Leo Castledine and Will Lankshear. Lincoln's squad is largely the same group that won League One, meaning Cohen and Shaw head into the weekend with no notable injury concerns to factor in.

Hellberg favours a high pressing approach in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, with Morgan Whittaker the player most likely to create and Sebastian Berhalter screening the back four. Lincoln will defend deep and look to hit Boro on the break and from set pieces and they were dangerous from dead balls throughout their promotion season, something Hellberg will be alert to given how exposed Boro were in that area during the play offs. Whether Boro's press can disrupt Lincoln's organisation before Lincoln's patience outlasts Boro's attacking impetus is the tactical contest at the heart of this game. If Lincoln hold their shape for long enough, Whittaker running in behind their full backs becomes Boro's clearest route to goal, particularly against defenders being tested at this level for the first time.

We're going 1-2 to Lincoln. Boro's high defensive line looks vulnerable to exactly the ball Lincoln will play on the break and if their low block holds for the first hour, two counters feel more probable than none. Hellberg's side may generate the higher volume of chances but Lincoln look well positioned to make them pay on the transition.
