Swansea City vs Blackburn Rovers Prediction: Can Matos Steady the Ship Against In-Form Rovers?

In-depth tactical preview and 2-1 score prediction for Swansea City vs Blackburn Rovers in the Championship on 31 October 2026.

ELO head-to-head

How Swansea City and Blackburn Rovers compare on rating, form and history.

Swansea City host Blackburn Rovers at the Swansea.com Stadium on 31 October 2026 in Championship Matchweek 13. Sitting second with 23 points from 12 games, they need a response after back to back defeats that have put their automatic promotion push under real pressure, whereas Blackburn arrive in tenth with 18 points, four wins from their last six and three points off the play off spots.

Vitor Matos took charge on 24 November 2025 after replacing Alan Sheehan and has built a high tempo, possession based side. Tony Mowbray followed on 5 June 2026 after Michael O'Neill's departure and though the two have not faced each other directly, their approaches could hardly be more different.

Swansea shipped a 1-0 loss at West Ham on 17 October after a strong opening to the season, then a 5-0 hammering at QPR a week later, their joint heaviest league defeat in 24 years. Blackburn have been heading the other way, with their 2-0 win over Wrexham on 24 October completing four wins in six and making them look increasingly like serious play off contenders rather than fringe candidates.

Swansea are without three first team players, with Ronald sidelined by a hamstring injury expected to last six to eight weeks, Cameron Burgess carrying an Achilles problem and Moussa Yeo also out with a hamstring issue, though Josh Key is fit. Blackburn travel without Yuki Ohashi (hamstring), Ryoya Morishita (unspecified) and Adam Forshaw (hip), thinning their options in attack and midfield.

Swansea's 4-3-3 or 4-1-4-1 setup is built around pressing hard, with Adam Idah and Zan Vipotnik the two most likely to run beyond the last defender. Idah's movement as the central striker is where most of their chances originate and Ronald's absence removes a natural wide option, so Matos will likely lean on full back overlaps and midfield rotations to create the overloads they would normally get from him.

Blackburn's 4-2-3-1 channels everything through Andri Gudjohnsen, who has scored in each of his last six league appearances against a Swansea back line that looked shaky at QPR. Mowbray's wingers will look to isolate full backs in the channels when Swansea's own full backs push forward, which is exactly the kind of space that hurt them at Loftus Road.

Swansea's central trio need to prevent Blackburn's number ten receiving possession in advanced areas, while Blackburn's double pivot will try to disrupt that possession and spring counters. With both squads thin in creative and defensive areas, sudden transitions are more likely to settle this than anything else.

Swansea have won five of the last six league meetings and conceded just four goals across those fixtures, which matters when you are trying to steady nerves after a 5-0 away loss and their press has repeatedly disrupted Blackburn's rhythm at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Set pieces will matter given the absences on both sides, with Gudjohnsen the target at corners and from crosses. Swansea should get their own opportunities there too, with Idah's hold up ability making him useful in those moments. The 5-0 at QPR may prompt Matos to set up more compactly early on, inviting Blackburn forward before looking to hurt them on the counter through the front two, while Blackburn, fresh off a clean sheet against Wrexham, will want defensive discipline.

We're going 2-1 to Swansea. Five wins from six in the head to head and a press that Blackburn have repeatedly struggled to handle at the Swansea.com Stadium are the two numbers that survive even a run like this. Gudjohnsen's scoring run will keep Blackburn in it but Swansea's head to head dominance at home is the one number that survives a bad run. Go 2-1.
