Watford host Preston North End at Vicarage Road on 8 September 2026, Matchweek 6 of the Championship. They sit 18th with five points from five games and badly need a home win, while Preston, bottom of the division in 23rd with just three points and ten goals conceded, arrive in the worst form in the division. Both clubs brought in attacking reinforcements over the summer and both have looked defensively shaky for it.
Alessio Dionisi was appointed Watford head coach on 15 June 2026, replacing Ed Still, while Paul Heckingbottom has been in charge at Preston since 20 August 2024 when he took over from Ryan Lowe. The two managers have not crossed paths before, given that Dionisi is new to English football.

Dionisi's Watford play a 4-2-3-1 built around patient possession and quick transitions, with full-backs pushing high and the double pivot protecting the defence. That shape creates channels for Luca Kjerrumgaard through the middle and Imran Louza sits at the base of the midfield to dictate tempo and break up Preston's counters. Heckingbottom sets Preston up in a compact defensive block that can shift between a back four and back five, with Devine and Kenny their most dangerous players in open play. Jordan Storey will need to organise the defence against Watford's movement and McCann's absence leaves a hole in the midfield screening that Louza may well exploit. Losing Chakvetadze also makes Maamma Watford's main threat out wide.
The midfield contest is the likeliest place this game is won or lost: if Devine presses Louza into errors, Preston win turnovers in a dangerous area of the pitch, whereas if Louza sidesteps the press, Watford's transitions open up and they should be able to move Preston's back line across and get in behind it. Turnovers, though, could be costly given how much space Watford's full-backs leave behind.
The two sides have met 17 times, splitting five wins each with seven draws and last season's encounter at Deepdale ended 2-2, which about sums up the fixture history.
Set pieces could matter given both defences are weakened by absentees and Preston's desperation for any kind of result could make this scrappier and more open than the form gap suggests.
Watford 2-1 Preston North End. With McCann absent, Preston's midfield screen is thinner than usual and Watford's patience in possession should eventually pull gaps in it. Kjerrumgaard looks the likeliest to take one of the chances that creates and while Preston can nick a goal through Kenny or Devine on the counter, a clean sheet looks beyond them given the absences and the defensive record.
