ELO head-to-head

How West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion compare on rating, form and history.

West Ham sit third in the Championship with 22 points from 12 games when they host West Brom, fifth on 21 points, at the London Stadium on 31 October 2026. Six points separate automatic promotion from the play off scramble and both sides know it. West Ham have scored 32 goals already, a remarkable rate at this level, while West Brom have largely done it the other way around. There is not much of a managerial head to head to lean on either. Nuno Espírito Santo only took charge in September 2025 after replacing Graham Potter and James Morrison was only confirmed permanently in spring 2026 after stepping up from Eric Ramsay's departure. They have not built up a tactical dossier on each other yet, which means whoever reads the game better on the night has the advantage.

West Ham's form has been streaky. They hammered Lincoln City 6-0 on 14 October, won 1-0 at Swansea three days later, then shipped three at home to Southampton on 24 October. That mix of brilliance and fragility is worth keeping in mind: this is a side that can blow anyone away but also switches off at the back when opponents find the right moment to transition. West Brom, meanwhile, ground out a 1-1 at Preston and beat Blackburn 3-2 around 17 October, neither result especially convincing but both pointing to a side that knows how to stay in games.

West Ham are managing a couple of injury concerns: Tomás Souček is doubtful with an ankle issue and Keiber Lamadrid is confirmed out through a muscular problem, leaving gaps in physical midfield presence and width that thin the rotation. West Brom's injury list is considerably worse. Noah Galves is out for the season with a knee injury, Mikey Johnston has a broken leg and Toby Collyer is sidelined with a hamstring complaint. Losing three players across defence and midfield in a congested run is a serious problem for Morrison.

Nuno's West Ham press high and build through possession before committing bodies forward. Jarrod Bowen has been the standout performer, operating as the Championship's highest scoring non centre forward with six goals already, working between the lines to find pockets of space. Kyle Walker-Peters scored against Southampton recently and pushes high from right back, while Konstantinos Mavropanos has a minor knee concern that looks short term.

West Brom under Morrison set up pragmatically. Aune Heggebø is the main threat up front, capable of holding play or arriving late on second balls, with Isaac Price operating in midfield. George Campbell organises the back line but asking him to hold things together without Galves, Johnston and Collyer across a congested fixture run is no small ask.

Bowen against Campbell and his defensive partners is the matchup that matters most. If the winger gets service in half spaces, West Ham should create the better chances, whereas if West Brom can disrupt their rhythm through quick transitions involving Heggebø and Price, they have a route back into it. Three missing defenders, though, makes that a much harder proposition to sustain.

The most recent significant meeting ended 3-1 to West Ham in May 2021. It at least suggests West Ham know how to control territory and tempo against this opponent, even if you should not lean too heavily on Premier League meetings as a guide to a Championship fixture.

West Ham's set piece delivery is a weapon: Bowen and Mavropanos are dangers from dead balls and West Brom's depleted defence will be asked to deal with aerial delivery without three of their usual bodies. The Southampton defeat is a reminder that West Ham can go cold quickly if the first goal does not arrive but the 6-0 against Lincoln City is the more recent measure of what this attack can do at its best.

West Ham 2-0 West Brom. Even without Souček and Lamadrid, Nuno has enough creativity through Bowen and the midfield runners around him to unlock West Brom at least twice. Bowen getting service in behind a reshuffled West Brom back line is the most likely path to both goals and there is no obvious cover for the space he will look to exploit. West Brom's absences at the back and in midfield limit their ability to sustain pressure or rotate properly, making a clean sheet over 90 minutes feel optimistic for them.
