Bradford City open the 2026-27 League One season at home to Peterborough United at University of Bradford Stadium on 15 August and the two clubs arrive in very different shape. The Bantams went from fourth in League Two to the League One playoff semi finals in consecutive seasons before Bolton ended their run last year and they come in wanting to prove the playoff exit was progress stalled rather than a ceiling hit. Peterborough spent last season going in the other direction, finishing 18th after a nine match winless run that killed their campaign long before May and Williams's arrival needs to signal something more than a rebranding exercise if the early sceptics are to be won over.
Graham Alexander has been at Bradford since November 2023, his contract extended through 2026-27 after delivering promotion and the playoff run, while Williams took charge at Peterborough in October 2025 on a deal until 2028 following Darren Ferguson's departure. The two managers have no meaningful head to head record to draw on.
Bradford's pre season read well: a 3-2 win over Preston North End, a 2-2 draw with Salford City and a 2-0 EFL Cup win against Rochdale. Peterborough beat Bristol Rovers 1-0 in their cup opener but then lost to Boston United from the National League and West Brom from the Championship, which is not the send-off a side trying to rebuild credibility needed.

Their likely XI features Bass in goal, a back four of Dornelly, Okagbue, O'Connor and Mills, with Woods sitting and Edwards, Jones, Khela and Shofowoke behind Harry Leonard up front.
The central tactical question is how much of Williams's possession based approach Peterborough have actually absorbed in less than a year. Building from the back and sustaining spells of pressure takes time to embed and Alexander's side will look to exploit any hesitancy in Peterborough's shape. The duel between Leonard and Bradford's back three of Gillesphey, Baldwin and Pennington will likely settle the result, with Connolly and Phillips tasked with cutting off supply before it reaches him.
Bradford have the better of this fixture, with seven wins from their last 16 meetings against Peterborough's five and 25 goals scored to Peterborough's 20, with the most recent clash ending 2-0 to Bradford at home in February 2026.
Detailed set piece data is sparse, though Bradford's aerial presence through Gillesphey and Pennington gives them an outlet at corners and free kicks while their defensive shape should restrict Peterborough at the other end. University of Bradford Stadium carries a particular intensity on opening day that tends to suit a well organised home side far more than a visiting team whose manager has had less than a year to embed his ideas and whose two most experienced midfielders are fitness doubts.
