How Cambridge United and Wycombe Wanderers compare on rating, form and history.

League One Matchweek 12 brings Cambridge United and Wycombe Wanderers together on 20 October 2026 with sharply contrasting ambitions. Cambridge sit fifth, closing in on the play off places after an impressive run of results, whereas Wycombe are around 12th under Tom Hounsell, whose first five matches as permanent manager produced four wins and a draw.

Neil Harris took charge at Cambridge on 19 February 2025 on a contract running until June 2027, while Hounsell was confirmed as Wycombe's permanent boss on 10 October 2026 after stepping up from an interim role on 8 September when Michael Duff was sacked. The two managers have never faced each other.

Cambridge arrive unbeaten across nine or ten matches in all competitions. The pick of those results came on 17 October when they beat Barnsley 2-1 away, with Ben Knight and Shayne Lavery scoring in a game that showed they can hold their shape on the road.

Wycombe's form under Hounsell has been W L D W W, capped by a 2-0 win over Notts County on 17 October that gave the squad momentum heading into this trip.

Cambridge are without Callum Stead, Callum Perry and Shane McLoughlin through injury. Stead and Perry are both wide attackers, leaving Harris short of options on the flanks, while McLoughlin's absence means limited midfield cover beyond the first choice pairing.

Wycombe's most significant problem is goalkeeper Matt Macey, sidelined by a cruciate ligament injury. His replacement is less assured with the ball at his feet and if Cambridge press from the front, Wycombe's back four may be forced into longer clearances rather than building through the thirds.

Cambridge set up in a 4-2-3-1 with two holding midfielders screening the back four. Ben Knight already has four league goals and opposing defences need to track him from every corner and free kick, which is where Cambridge have caused the most problems in recent weeks.

Wycombe have become more expansive since Hounsell took over, with Fred Onyedinma and Cauley Woodrow the main outlets in attack. Jack Grimmer overlaps from right back and tends to arrive late into the box, putting consistent pressure on Cambridge's left side.

Mpanzu drives carries from deep and recycles possession for the players around him, which is the engine of Cambridge's build up. Ahadme works between the lines against a Wycombe back four that pushes up and Cambridge's unbeaten run owes plenty to how little they have conceded from open play. Onyedinma on the counter is the most credible threat when Cambridge commit men forward.

Without Macey, Wycombe may lean on a more direct approach and Cambridge pressing from the front could produce turnovers close to Wycombe's back four. Hounsell's attacking shape also leaves spaces behind the Wycombe full backs and with three wide players missing from Cambridge's rotation, holding a disciplined shape across ninety minutes is more demanding than it has been in recent weeks.

Wycombe have the better of the recent head to head, remaining unbeaten in the last five meetings through a mix of wins and draws. Cambridge's home advantage and current league position should count for more this time.

Knight's four league goals make every corner and free kick a danger and Macey's absence removes Wycombe's most commanding presence from crosses. Ahadme arriving late to the back post is a consistent threat that Wycombe will have to deal with from a more vulnerable position than usual. Cambridge need the points to cement a top six place and maintain pressure on the teams above them, whereas Wycombe need consistency to show whether Hounsell's win rate holds against better organised opposition.

Cambridge United 2-1 Wycombe Wanderers. Knight and Lavery are the most likely scorers for the home side, with Onyedinma or Woodrow the most likely source for Wycombe. Wycombe have not kept a clean sheet away from home under Hounsell and losing Macey long term makes it difficult to see them taking more than one goal from this ground on current evidence.
