Luton Town host Stockport County at Kenilworth Road on 2 September 2026, a League One fixture with real stakes on both sides. After back to back relegations, Luton sit 13th with four points from three games and need to build some rhythm under Jack Wilshere, whereas Stockport arrive third on six points, looking to extend the run that took them to a play off final in 2025-26. Wilshere was appointed on 13 October 2025, replacing Matt Bloomfield, while Jimmy McNulty took charge on 5 June 2026 after Dave Challinor left. They have never faced each other as managers, so whatever tactical battle emerges will be entirely new ground for both.
Luton's last three reads L-D-W: hammered 5-2 at Mansfield on 30 August 2026, a 2-2 draw with Notts County on 22 August, then a 4-3 win over Reading on 15 August - the pattern obvious. Luton have had the better of this fixture recently, winning 3-1 in the EFL Trophy final at Wembley on 12 April 2026 and 3-0 in a league meeting earlier that season. McNulty's Stockport looks better organised than last season's version and League One is a different context from a cup final, so the gap has probably narrowed since April.
Set pieces could easily decide a game that looks likely to stay tight and low scoring, with Luton carrying height both ends and Stockport's shape built to deal with it. The 5-2 hammering at Mansfield is fresh enough that Wilshere will have spent the week on defensive organisation.
