Bradford City arrive at Home Park on 29 August 2026 as League One's early leaders, unbeaten across all competitions after three straight wins plus a penalty shoot out victory over Burnley and the gap in momentum between them and 22nd placed Plymouth could hardly be starker. Plymouth are still without a league win and exited the Carabao Cup before August was out, which matters more when you recall that Tom Cleverley needed 14 wins from the last 22 games of 2025/26 just to keep the club in the division. Whether that late charge reflected genuine progress or sheer survival instinct is what this season is supposed to answer.
Cleverley and Graham Alexander haven't met as managers, with Alexander contracted at Bradford through 2028 and working alongside assistant Chris Lucketti since November 2023, while Cleverley only took charge at Plymouth on 13 June 2025, replacing Miron Muslic, who had been in post from January to May 2025.
Bradford have beaten Peterborough United 2-0, Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 and Rochdale 2-0 in their last three competitive matches, keeping a clean sheet in every one, then extended that run through a goalless draw and penalty shoot out against Burnley. Plymouth's last four reads less pleasantly: a 1-3 defeat at Stockport County, a 1-1 draw with Wycombe Wanderers, a 2-4 Carabao Cup loss to Coventry City and then a 2-0 cup win over Exeter City.
Plymouth are without Michael Baidoo for around three months following hamstring surgery and Malachi Boateng for an extended spell with a knee ligament injury. Both were midfield regulars and their absence leaves Cleverley leaning on new arrivals Oliver Irow on loan and Tyreeq Bakinson. Bradford have their own concern in Tyreik Wright, out for six to eight weeks with a quad injury and Joe Wright is also a doubt, which complicates their wing back system on the left.
Cleverley has Plymouth pressing hard and building through possession in a 4-2-3-1 but losing Baidoo and Boateng strips out the screening presence that system depends on. Caleb Watts will need to cover more ground in transition with Jamie Paterson adding experience and Matty Sorinola's ability to play across defence and midfield gives Cleverley some flexibility. Bali Mumba is Plymouth's likeliest source of direct danger.
Bradford run a wing back system with Ibou Touray on the left and Aden Baldwin as one of the centre backs. Antoni Sarcevic, recently extended through 2028, is their most productive midfielder by numbers, with 18 goals in 73 appearances and the captain's armband to go with it. Tyreik Wright's absence limits Bradford's options on the left and that could be the channel Plymouth target, particularly if Sorinola or Mumba can get in behind the replacement.
These two met twice last season, Bradford winning 1-0 at home in December 2025 before the sides drew 1-1 in April 2026 and that context sits alongside the motivational stakes: Bradford need to prove their start is sustainable at a difficult venue, while Plymouth really cannot afford to slip further behind in the table.
Plymouth Argyle 2-1 Bradford City. Bradford's defensive record is impressive but Wright's absence blunts their left side and Cleverley's side need this result more urgently than Bradford do. In League One that desperation tends to show up in the moments that decide tight games. Expect something narrow and uncomfortable.
