Reading host Luton Town at the Select Car Leasing Stadium on 15 August, with kick off at 12:30pm BST, in the opening weekend of the 2026/27 League One season. Luton ended 2025/26 just a point outside the playoffs while Reading, despite collecting 63 points, could only manage 12th.
Leam Richardson took charge of Reading in October 2025 on a contract running until 2027, while Jack Wilshere arrived at Luton in the same month and promptly led them to the 2025/26 EFL Trophy. Neither has managed against the other at this level yet and Richardson's system still looked inconsistent during Reading's late season slump, while Wilshere had a full summer window to begin reshaping Luton.
Reading won five of six pre season friendlies and got past Bromley in the EFL Cup on penalties after a 1-1 draw, though their 2025/26 campaign fizzled out with one win in the final eight matches. Luton had four wins and a draw from six pre season outings before beating Gillingham 3-0 in the EFL Cup, with Wells, Kodua and Benny Benagr all on the scoresheet.
Both squads are close to full strength, with Reading looking set to line up with Pereira in goal, a back four of Godwin-Malife, O'Connor, Ward and Roberts, Wing and Savage anchoring midfield and Lisbie, Stokes and Kyerewaa supporting Marriott up front, while summer additions Kyreece Lisbie, Udoka Godwin-Malife, Josh Stokes and Jacob Brown add further depth. Luton are expected to go with Shea in goal, Jones, Odoffin, Johnston and Naismith in defence, Luker, Walsh and Clark through the middle and the attacking trio of Kodua, Wells and Benagr, with George Johnston, Kasey Palmer, Harrison Ashby and Callum Marshall among their arrivals.
Richardson runs a high pressing system, while Wilshere's Luton press with similar intensity but lean more on transitions and set pieces. The midfield contest between Reading's Savage and Wing and Luton's Clark, Walsh and Luker is where the game could open up, with Luton's three man midfield potentially leaving Savage or Wing exposed in transition.
Luton have not beaten Reading in four straight meetings across all competitions, including a 3-2 defeat when Reading completed the double in 2025/26, though both squads have changed significantly since those meetings. Luton's set piece threat has grown under Wilshere and could settle a tight game, adding to the problems facing a Reading side already stretched by Luton's pace in transition. Home advantage and four meetings without a Luton win are the strongest cards Reading hold, though the cup evidence makes them hard to lean on too heavily.
Luton to win 2-1. Their pre season output and the 3-0 cup win over Gillingham suggest Wells and Kodua are already clicking and Reading's aggressive press will give them room to run. Reading will make it uncomfortable with home support and Marriott should get on the scoresheet but Wilshere's side look the more dangerous outfit.
