Detailed tactical preview and 2-1 score prediction for Wycombe Wanderers vs Burton Albion in League One on 31 October 2026.

How Wycombe Wanderers and Burton Albion compare on rating, form and history.

Wycombe Wanderers host Burton Albion at Adams Park on 31 October 2026 in a League One mid table fixture with more going on beneath the surface than the two point gap between the sides suggests. Wycombe sit 15th with 15 points from 12 games while Burton are somewhere around 12th to 14th on roughly 17 points from 13 outings and the added intrigue is that Wycombe manager Tom Hounsell served as interim at Burton in 2024 during a genuinely unstable period there, with Gary Bowyer the man who arrived that December and steadied things.

There is not much tactical history between Hounsell and Bowyer as opposing managers and Hounsell's brief stint at Burton tells us little about how they will set up against each other here. Bowyer has been in charge since December 2024, with his side organised and direct when they are at their best. Hounsell only got the Wycombe job permanently on 10 October 2026 after Michael Duff departed and is still finding his way at Adams Park, though his preferences for organised build up and set piece aggression are already visible.

Wycombe's last five reads D-D-W-L-D. The 2-0 home win over Notts County on 17 October was the high point, back to back draws against Cambridge (2-2 away on 20 October) and AFC Wimbledon (1-1 on 24 October) suggest the results are there even when the performances are not. Burton's run of W-D-D-L-L is more worrying. The 2-1 win at Leyton Orient around 24 October looked like a turning point but the two defeats since have raised questions about their defensive organisation that Bowyer has not yet answered.

Wycombe are without Matt Macey, who is out with a cruciate ligament injury, which disrupts their build up from the back and puts more pressure on the defenders to organise themselves without him. No other absences have been confirmed for either side. Burton appear to have everyone available and Krubally returns from suspension, giving Bowyer an aerial presence at set pieces and a player capable of holding a higher defensive line when the situation demands it.

Both sides use a 4-2-3-1 and the game will come down to the midfield battle. Jayden Wareham leads the line for Wycombe with five league goals and is their most direct route to goal, with Fred Onyedinma wide on the right and Cauley Woodrow in the hole behind him. Wycombe may go more direct without Macey, leaning on the double pivot to recycle quickly rather than building through the centre backs. Burton's midfield pair of Kgaogelo Chauke and Will Collar have both scored recently and will want space to arrive late into the box, so the question is whether Wycombe's holders can deny them that. Finn Delap leads the line for Burton with Mark O'Mahony available to press or hold depending on the phase.

The individual duel worth watching is Wareham against Burton's centre backs. He is effective when he can time his run onto the shoulder of the last defender and with Macey absent from the defensive organisation, Burton may find themselves slightly more exposed at the other end too. Set pieces should favour Wycombe given Hounsell's emphasis on attacking deliveries.

Wycombe have dominated recent meetings, winning three of the last four: 3-0 in February 2026, 2-0 in March 2025 and 3-2 in October 2024, with a 0-0 draw in December 2025 the only blip and no convincing answer from Burton across any of those fixtures.

Wycombe 2-1, a narrow home win. Their home form, Wareham's five goals and the head to head record all point the same way and Hounsell knowing Burton from the inside does not hurt. Burton will score (Delap up front and Chauke and Collar arriving late make that likely) but they have conceded in most of their recent away outings.
