Arsenal open the 2026/27 Premier League season as defending champions against a Coventry City side that hasn't played top flight football since 2001. The gap in experience and squad depth between these two clubs is wide enough that a one sided Matchweek 1 opener looks likely.

Saka's battle with Coventry's left sided defenders is likely to be the most telling duel on the pitch, given his ability to combine with overlapping full backs and drive inside.
Coventry are expected to park in a compact 4-3-3, with Ellis Simms leading the line and Matt Grimes tasked with disrupting Arsenal's rhythm centrally. With their three main attackers unavailable, Lampard will likely settle for a low block and whether Rice or Grimes wins the central battle will probably decide how much of the ball Coventry see at all.
The absences on both sides reshape the match considerably. Arsenal need their collective pressing and midfield screening to compensate for losing two starting centre backs, while Coventry have lost the players who would have given them the best chance of punishing any defensive disorganisation. Arsenal's build-up play, with Ødegaard dropping deep to receive from Rice, becomes the natural beneficiary of that imbalance and Saka is well placed to exploit whatever space Coventry leave wide.

Set pieces are probably Coventry's clearest route to goal given Arsenal's reshuffled backline and Lampard will aim deliveries at Simms to test whoever lines up at centre back. Arsenal have been well drilled from dead balls under Arteta though and between Ødegaard's delivery and Saka's movement around the box, they carry the bigger threat from them anyway.

Without Wright, Mason-Clark and Rudoni, Coventry have no realistic way of threatening even when gaps appear in Arsenal's reshuffled defence and Rice's ability to screen the space Grimes would need to operate in makes the central battle look one sided too. Ødegaard and Saka did exactly this to City in the Shield just days ago and Coventry arrive with far less to throw at it.
