The 2026-27 Ligue 1 season opens at Stade Velodrome on 21 August 2026 with Marseille hosting Strasbourg and while it's the first day of the campaign, the two sides arrive from very different places. Both start on zero points after summers of upheaval but Marseille carry the weight of home expectations under a new manager while Strasbourg are still figuring out what they are under theirs. There's no league form to read into and neither side did enough in pre season to settle the nerves, with Strasbourg's results raising real questions about how quickly Oliveira's system is bedding in. A poor result here doesn't end anyone's season but it makes the opening weeks considerably more complicated.

Strasbourg run a similar shape under Oliveira but without Panichelli, Emanuel Mara has to do far more in isolation up front. The specific mechanic to watch is whether El Mourabet and Oyedele can win second balls consistently, if they can't, Harit will have time and space in the middle third to pick passes forward, which is precisely how Marseille want to play. If Strasbourg's double pivot can't hold a compact shape, the build up will cut straight through them.
Timber's suspension limits Marseille's ability to progress from deep, pushing more responsibility onto Harit to receive under pressure and move the ball wide. Aguerd's groin concern complicates defensive organisation further and a late fitness failure would mean a reshuffle that leaves gaps for Strasbourg on the counter. Moumbagna's absence reduces Genesio's options off the bench if he needs to reshape the attack in the final quarter, though that's the smallest of the three problems. For Strasbourg, Mara has to shoulder a heavier load without Panichelli, holding play up and bringing runners through from midfield, while Chilwell's hamstring concern could push Oliveira into a more conservative shape that concedes Marseille plenty of territory. Paixao and Weah should find gaps opening up behind Strasbourg's full backs, who haven't had long to learn where they're supposed to be in Oliveira's defensive shape.
Marseille also hold a historical edge at the Velodrome and corners and free kicks could expose Strasbourg early given their defensive unit has had limited time to drill zonal marking together under Oliveira. Genesio's sides attack set pieces aggressively and the absence of Aguerd may actually encourage the remaining centre backs to take more assertive positions at corners. Strasbourg need to deal with this quickly or they'll concede early and have to come from behind in a ground where that rarely works out.
Genesio's setup creates the right problems for a Strasbourg side still building defensive structure under a new manager. With Harit given licence to roam and Paixao and Weah looking to exploit gaps behind the full backs, there's enough here for Gouiri or Paixao to score. Mara will look to run in behind when Marseille lose the ball high up the pitch but sustaining anything more than that without Panichelli and with questions over Chilwell looks beyond where Strasbourg currently are. If their shape holds for the first half hour, expect Genesio to push Paixao inside and overload the right, which is where this should open up. Marseille 2-1 Strasbourg.
