Detailed tactical preview and 1-2 score prediction for Augsburg vs Freiburg in the Bundesliga on 31 October 2026.

How Augsburg and Freiburg compare on rating, form and history.

FC Augsburg host SC Freiburg on 31 October 2026 in Bundesliga Matchday 8, ninth against third, though the visitors arrive looking shakier than that gap suggests after back to back league defeats. Augsburg sit on nine points from seven matches and Freiburg on 13 and while Manuel Baum's side have gone winless in five Bundesliga outings they haven't dropped a home league point all season, four days after beating SG Sonnenhof Grossaspach 4-2 in the Pokal. Baum and Julian Schuster have no competitive head to head record to draw on.

Augsburg have drawn their last three Bundesliga matches and lost two, having beaten only lower league opposition in the Pokal in that stretch, with the most recent league outing ending 1-1 against Union Berlin before the international break, whereas Freiburg have dropped six points in two games, losing 1-3 at Bayern Munich on 25 October and then 1-2 at home to Leverkusen.

Augsburg have several personnel problems coming in. Abdulai Juma Bah is suspended after his red card against Union Berlin, Noahkai Banks is out with a knee injury, Steve Mounié remains unavailable and Calvin Brackelmann is doubtful with concussion symptoms. Freiburg are without Florent Muslija until late December with a cruciate injury and Jordy Makengo, Philipp Treu, Berkay Yilmaz and Derry Scherhant are all doubts with muscle, ankle, dental and foot problems respectively.

Bah's suspension is the most disruptive Augsburg absence: without that physical midfield presence, Han-Noah Massengo must absorb Bah's defensive workload on top of his own, which leaves Marius Wolf carrying far more of Augsburg's attacking impetus from wide and Gregoritsch relatively isolated up front. Muslija's absence on the Freiburg side, meanwhile, shifts more creative responsibility onto Vincenzo Grifo, who has a long habit of hurting Augsburg. Suzuki, with four goals in seven league games, is the sharpest finisher Freiburg send in behind the press, with Maximilian Eggestein operating as the deep lying distributor who drops to receive and switch play. Ginter and Lienhart are dominant in the air, which means Augsburg will struggle to profit from set pieces even if they create the situations.

The duel to watch is Grifo finding pockets behind Augsburg's wing backs against a Massengo already stretched thin trying to disrupt Freiburg's build up and if Brackelmann is ruled out there could be real exposure down Augsburg's left side, with Grifo the likeliest Freiburg player to exploit that channel.

Augsburg and Freiburg drew 2-2 in January 2026, Augsburg won 3-1 in Freiburg in August 2025 and the sides played out a 0-0 in March 2025, leaving Augsburg unbeaten in the last three with most meetings producing at least two goals.

Augsburg's aerial threat at set pieces gives them a realistic route to goal even against Freiburg's experienced centre backs, particularly if Freiburg's injury doubts thin out their air coverage. Both clubs had cup games midweek and will be picking from slightly stretched squads: Augsburg may rotate given five games without a win, while Freiburg need to manage a side that has played twice in four days. Augsburg need something from this game to avoid slipping into genuine trouble, whereas Freiburg cannot afford a third straight league defeat if Champions League football remains a realistic target.

Grifo's movement, Suzuki's finishing and Eggestein's distribution give Freiburg enough to end their poor run even without Muslija and Augsburg's unbeaten home record will be put under real pressure by a Freiburg side that is better than their last two results suggest. Augsburg will score, probably from a set piece or a Gregoritsch led break but Freiburg have too much going forward and win 2-1 in what shapes up as a close, attritional contest decided by the quality that Grifo and Suzuki bring.
