How Borussia M'gladbach and Paderborn compare on rating, form and history.

Borussia Mönchengladbach host SC Paderborn on 31 October 2026 in a Bundesliga Matchweek 8 game that both clubs can ill afford to lose. Gladbach sit 18th with just three points from seven games, a start bad enough to already cost one manager his job. Paderborn, newly promoted for the 2026/27 season, are 13th on eight points and focused entirely on proving they belong at this level for a third time. Two clubs running low on points and patience share a pitch at Stadion im Borussia Park, with Gladbach trying to build on their first league win under Alexander Blessin and Paderborn looking to keep their grip on mid table. Blessin and Ralf Kettemann have no prior head to head record as managers, so Saturday doubles as their first tactical meeting.

Gladbach arrive in decent shape after back to back wins: a 3-2 Bundesliga victory at VfB Stuttgart on 23 October, then a 2-0 DFB Pokal win over Karlsruher SC three days later, though three consecutive defeats preceded both results. Paderborn's recent sequence reads W-L-D-L-W, with a 1-0 league win over Hamburger SV on 24 October providing a lift before a 1-0 cup exit at Stuttgart three days later undercut it.

Blessin, appointed on 22 September 2026 after replacing Eugen Polanski, has reorganised Gladbach into a 3-4-2-1, tightening a backline that had conceded in every game under Polanski. The injury list complicates things considerably: Tim Kleindienst is out with a thigh problem, Franck Honorat is missing with a muscle issue and Ko Itakura remains sidelined with an ankle injury, leaving a back three without its most experienced head.

Kettemann, who took charge at Paderborn in summer 2025, has his own concerns. Marcel Hoffmeier is out with a hamstring complaint and Nyamekye Awortwie-Grant is absent with a knee injury, weakening both Paderborn's set piece options and their midfield depth.

Blessin's 3-4-2-1 makes Joe Scally central to everything Gladbach want to do, shuttling between the back three and the opposition half to provide width on both sides of the ball. Shuto Machino starts as the lone striker, holding the ball up and linking with the two number tens rather than running in behind. Florian Neuhaus should dictate tempo from midfield but without Kleindienst as a target and Honorat stretching the line, Gladbach have no obvious route into the final third beyond Scally's crosses and no natural aerial receiver waiting for them.

Paderborn defend deep and in numbers under Kettemann and they arrive with a set piece threat that could trouble a reshuffled Gladbach back line. Stefano Marino and Steffen Tigges both offer aerial presence at corners and free kicks. Marino can also hurt Gladbach if Scally is caught high on the right, leaving space in behind for a run in behind. Santiago Castañeda screens the back four and wins second balls without committing forward, which matters if Paderborn are to hold their shape through a long second half. Without Hoffmeier, that discipline will be harder to sustain.

Gladbach are unbeaten in six meetings with Paderborn, winning five of them but with Itakura absent and two key attackers missing, the head to head record flatters a home side that is nowhere near full strength.

Gladbach will carry the ball into Paderborn's half for long stretches but they have no natural replacement for either Kleindienst or Honorat. Paderborn are organised enough to stay compact and Marino in particular can hurt them if Gladbach's wing backs are caught high. Blessin's improved defensive structure might actually work against his own team here, because it makes the game tight enough for Paderborn to stay in it longer than the head to head suggests. Their 1-0 win over Hamburg showed they can extract a result when largely outplayed and the 3-4-2-1 may suppress them for much of the match without manufacturing the goals that Kleindienst and Honorat would otherwise provide. Prediction: 1-1.
