There is no head to head record between the two managers to draw on. Wagner has built a counter attacking framework that channels rapid transitions through Said El Mala, their most dangerous player by some distance and the likeliest route to hurting anyone in open play. Ragnar Ache and Marius Bulter complete the attacking unit, while Tom Krauss screens ahead of the defence.
With Hübers and Sebulonsen missing, Köln's centre back pairing lacks the physicality and aerial cover that defined their better defensive outings last season. The remaining defenders are likely to drop deeper and stay narrow, conceding width and contesting crosses rather than holding a higher line they cannot sustain without the personnel.
Hložek and Wimmer have the pace and movement to find space behind Köln's midfield and Wimmer in particular looked sharp this pre season, scoring twice in warm up matches that explain why Ilzer trusts him so consistently in the left channel. Ozan Kabak adds something different from centre back, both defensively and with his willingness to carry the ball into midfield when the opportunity arises.
Krauss has to screen passes into Hoffenheim's forward line while Kabak looks to step up and create overloads and whoever wins that exchange controls the game's tempo. El Mala against Kabak in transition is another battle worth watching, because any lapse in Kabak's positioning could hand the Köln forward a clear run at goal. When Hoffenheim win possession in the middle third, they can advance quickly enough to catch Köln's depleted back line before it resets, particularly through Wimmer's runs into the channels.
Hoffenheim hold the historical edge with roughly 14 wins to Köln's 9 across 32 meetings, though the last two encounters were settled by a single goal, with a 1-0 Köln win in October 2025 following a 2-2 draw in February 2026, which tells you more about how difficult Köln are to break down at home than the overall record does. Set pieces remain Köln's most reliable way to score here, with El Mala and Ache both capable of attacking a cross and Hoffenheim will need to stay switched on at corners and free kicks despite their improved defensive shape under Ilzer.
Hoffenheim carry more options off the bench, which matters more than usual given Wagner is already stretched at the back from the opening whistle. Wimmer and Hložek should create enough behind Köln's back four to win this, even if the first half stays tight and El Mala will get at least one clear opportunity on the break. Without a fully fit Kramarić, the margin may be smaller than the quality gap between these squads implies. Hoffenheim should take three points but Köln's home record and El Mala's threat keep this at 1-2 rather than anything more comfortable. If Kramarić recovers in time, that equation shifts further in the visitors' favour, if not, Köln will fancy their chances of staying in it.
