Schalke 04 vs RB Leipzig Prediction: Muslić's Defensive Wall Meets Demichelis' Creative Force

In-depth tactical analysis and 1-2 score prediction for Schalke 04 vs RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga on 31 October 2026 at VELTINS-Arena.

ELO head-to-head

How Schalke 04 and RB Leipzig compare on rating, form and history.

Schalke host RB Leipzig at the VELTINS Arena on 31 October 2026, a Bundesliga Matchday 8 fixture with very different stakes for each side. Schalke sit 15th with six points from seven games, already in territory where survival is the only honest ambition, whereas Leipzig, fifth with 12 points, are chasing a Champions League place. The shape of the game is fairly obvious on paper: Schalke will try to make it ugly and Leipzig will try to make it beautiful. What makes it interesting is the injury chaos on both sides, which scrambles the usual calculations.

Miron Muslić has been in charge since May 2025, while Martín Demichelis took over from Ole Werner on 1 July 2026 with a contract through 2028. This is their first meeting as managers, so there is no tactical history to draw on.

Schalke's last six results read D W D L L D. Three draws and a cup loss to a third tier side tell you where the ceiling is and their 0-0 with Köln on 24 October showed they can keep a clean sheet when organised, though a 2-0 DFB Pokal defeat to Dynamo Dresden three days later was a reminder that this squad has limits. Leipzig are W W L L W in their last five, bookended by a 4-0 demolition of Elversberg on 24 October. Twenty goals in seven league games is a good rate but their away form has been patchier and that is what counts here.

Muslić is working with half a squad. Karaman, Sylla, Wöber, Schallenberg, Gantenbein and Højlund are all out injured, Gosens is a doubt with a head issue and El-Faouzi is carrying a nose concern. Losing that many players from both defensive and attacking depth means asking Edin Džeko and Hee-Chan Hwang to conjure something from nothing while a back three that cannot afford a single positional mistake holds it together behind them.

Leipzig's situation is less dire but still messy, with Nkunku doubtful through a groin problem, Baumgartner carrying a thigh issue, Estève another doubt and both Ouédraogo and Guiu definitely out with shoulder and hamstring injuries respectively. Demichelis will likely adapt his shape, particularly if Nkunku does not make it.

Leipzig's 4-2-3-1 relies on Raum's overlapping runs from left back and Nusa and Gruda's movement in the half spaces to pull defensive lines apart. Antonio Nusa and Brajan Gruda are Leipzig's clearest path to goal with Nkunku doubtful, while Willi Orbán steps into midfield when possession is secure, recycling the ball before Leipzig's forwards receive between the lines. Nusa's dribbling and Gruda's movement should still create enough to worry a depleted Schalke defence, even if Leipzig's forward options overall are shorter than they would be at full strength.

Schalke's 3-5-2 (or 5-3-2 depending on the phase) is built around staying compact and forcing opponents wide, with Loris Karius organising from goal and Timo Becker anchoring the back three. Without Wöber and Schallenberg, that shape is thinner than Muslić would like and Džeko's hold up play and Hwang's runs in behind are the only realistic transition outlet, though winning the ball back against Leipzig's press is far from straightforward.

The key battle is Schalke's midfield trio against Leipzig's width. If the wing backs stay disciplined and track Raum's runs, Schalke can limit Leipzig to crossing from deep. If they do not, Leipzig find the half spaces and Gruda finds space to cut inside. Leipzig's high defensive line is designed to cut off Hwang's runs early, making Džeko's ability to hold up and bring others in almost the only route Schalke have. Schalke's zonal marking held against Köln last week but losing Wöber and Schallenberg from aerial duels at corners is a vulnerability Leipzig's Orbán and Raum will look to exploit.

Leipzig have won seven of the ten meetings between these sides, with Schalke winning two and one ending in a draw, the most recent of which ended 4-2 to Leipzig. Leipzig's attacking options are thinner now than then but the structural gap has not closed.

Schalke will make this hard and their defensive shape should keep this goalless for an hour but fatigue in a depleted squad tends to open space. Džeko looks capable of snatching something on the counter to give Schalke an unlikely lead and once their defensive shape stretches (and with this squad it will), Nusa or Gruda should find the half space they have been probing all game. A 1-2 with Schalke scoring first and Leipzig finding a way through a thinning defence after the hour.
