Bundesliga Matchday 2 brings VfB Stuttgart and 1. FC Köln together at the Mercedes-Benz Arena on 4 September 2026, with both clubs carrying very different feelings after the opening weekend. Stuttgart are bottom of the table after a 1-5 hiding from Bayern Munich and the manner of that defeat will sting more than the result itself, whereas Köln sit seventh after grinding out a 3-2 win over Hoffenheim.
Sebastian Hoeneß has been in charge since April 2023, brought in to steady Stuttgart during a serious relegation battle and has since built them into a consistent force in the top half. Wagner is far newer in the permanent role, having stepped up from interim status in May 2026 after Lukas Kwasniok was replaced and there is no meaningful head to head record between them to draw on.
Stuttgart's only Bundesliga outing so far ended in that 1-5 loss to Bayern Munich on Matchday 1, exposing the risks that come with a high defensive line when transitions break down quickly, whereas Köln's opener was a different story entirely, a 3-2 win at home against Hoffenheim.
Stuttgart are without Dan-Axel Zagadou (hamstring) and sweating on Chris Führich, who is doubtful with a muscular problem. Losing both would hurt: Zagadou is the centre back who drives the ball forward and Führich is the main threat on Stuttgart's left side. Köln have problems of their own, with Luca Waldschmidt out (muscular issue), Timo Hübers missing through a knee injury and Linton Maina doubtful, which means Wagner will lean more on Saïd El Mala and loan arrival Mikey Moore to take on the creative roles Waldschmidt would have filled.
Hoeneß typically sets Stuttgart up in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 built around high pressing and without Zagadou they may lack the range to play out cleanly from the back, inviting more pressure on the deeper players. Führich's possible absence further complicates the left, where his direct running stretches defences and creates space for others, making Mittelstädt's overlapping runs at left back more important as a result. Angelo Stiller will need to control the tempo while shielding the back four and Deniz Undav carries most of the creative and goal scoring burden in the final third.
Wagner's Köln sit in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 and with Waldschmidt and Hübers out, keeping shape is the priority before springing El Mala and Thijs Dallinga in behind. El Mala's movement will test Stuttgart's ability to hold a high line in a way that already proved costly against Bayern, while Dallinga's instinct in front of goal is what Köln will rely on if El Mala cannot create space himself, with Moore providing another option off the bench.
The central battle runs through Stiller and Köln's midfield block. If Stiller can operate between the lines and pick passes into the final third, Stuttgart should generate the clearest chances but if Köln's midfielders screen those channels well, El Mala and Dallinga will get space to run in behind a high Stuttgart line, which is exactly what proved so damaging against Bayern. Mittelstädt's forward runs will test Köln's right side throughout and Köln will need to stay disciplined there to stop Undav finding pockets in behind.
Stuttgart lead the head to head with 14 wins from 32 previous Bundesliga meetings against Köln's 8 and the most recent encounter went Stuttgart's way as well, 3-1 in February 2026. With Hübers absent, Köln also lose their most reliable aerial defender at set pieces, which Stuttgart should look to exploit. Early on, Stuttgart might press higher to banish the memory of the Bayern defeat, which could leave them exposed to exactly the kind of break Köln thrive on and whoever comes off the bench late may prove to be the difference.
Stuttgart should win this 2-1. Their home record against Köln is strong, they have enough quality through Stiller, Undav and Mittelstädt to break down a Köln side missing two important players and while El Mala and Dallinga will trouble them on the counter and Köln will probably score, Stiller's ability to control tempo and Stuttgart's set piece threat should be enough to take the three points. Expect Stuttgart to score first, Köln to equalise on the break and Mittelstädt to settle it late from a set piece.
