FC Groningen vs FC Twente Prediction: Twente's Attack Poised to Test Home Side's Defensive Gaps

FC Groningen host FC Twente at the Euroborg on Matchday 5 of the 2026-27 Eredivisie season, with both sides on six points going into the weekend. Groningen sit tenth after four matches, Twente ninth after three, so nothing separates them on paper. When they switch play to Daan Rots on the flank, Groningen's covering defenders will be exposed one on one at full stretch. Jorg Schreuders and Thom van Bergen are Groningen's main outlets on the break and if they can isolate Twente's full backs there are goals to be had, though any turnover against a front four as mobile as Twente's invites a swift counter attack, which is roughly how Groningen shipped five against PSV.

Groningen need a reaction after the PSV humiliation and Twente want to prove their form is real, which makes this feel higher stakes than two sides on six points would normally warrant. The Euroborg crowd should help Groningen sustain their pressing intensity but the four defensive absences are the dominant factor and Weghorst and Daan Rots are the direct beneficiaries. Van den Brom can introduce fresh legs in wide areas in the final quarter when Groningen's emergency centre backs are running on fumes.

Twente win 2-1. Groningen will start well and could grab an early goal through a set piece or a van Bergen counter attack, with plenty of motivation to make a point after the PSV horror show. But four defensive absences is a lot to overcome against a side with Twente's attacking options and once Zerrouki starts finding Weghorst with regularity the game should shift in Twente's favour.
