PSV Eindhoven vs FC Groningen Prediction: Bosz's Side to Overpower Early Leaders

PSV host Groningen at the Philips Stadion on 23 August 2026 in Matchweek 3. PSV sit sixth with four points after a draw and a narrow win, whereas Groningen come in second on six, having won both their opening games. For Groningen to still be above PSV at this stage is the kind of thing that shouldn't last long but you can see why they would want to use this game to prove otherwise. Peter Bosz and Dick Lukkien have barely crossed paths since both took charge at their respective clubs on 1 July 2023, leaving no real tactical history to lean on and neither side has any absences to report so both managers name full squads.

PSV drew 2-2 with Fortuna Sittard on 8 August before winning 2-1 at Excelsior a week later, suggesting they haven't fully clicked in attack yet. Groningen have been sharper: a 2-1 home win over Utrecht followed by a 4-1 demolition of ADO Den Haag, with Brynjolfur Willumsson scoring twice across those two games.

If PSV get control of the middle, Dest and Perisic running in behind Groningen's wing backs is the most likely way they carve them open.

PSV lead the all time record with 19 wins from 28 meetings and the Philips Stadion has been particularly unkind to visiting sides in recent years, which puts Groningen in a position where a point here would keep them in the top three going into the international break. Set pieces could also tip the balance given how organised both sides are defensively. Perisic and Dest both deliver from dead balls and Groningen will need to be alert to late runners at the back post.
