The 2026/27 Primeira Liga opens with about as clean a mismatch as you can get on an opening weekend. CF Estrela da Amadora, who survived relegation by their fingernails on the final day of 2025/26, welcome Sporting CP to the Estádio José Gomes on August 8, a side arriving fresh off a league and cup double and a Champions League quarter final under Rui Borges.
Estrela now operate under Pepa, who took over in July and spent much of pre season drilling defensive shape rather than experimenting with anything ambitious. That's probably the right call given who they're hosting: survival is the job and Pepa knows it. Sporting, by contrast, showed up to pre season looking like a side that had nothing to prove and everything to reinforce, pressing with the same relentlessness that dismantled opponents last season.
Pepa and Borges haven't met in this specific context before but Borges's record since arriving at Sporting in December 2024 is difficult to overstate. He delivered two trophies in under a year and took Sporting to a Champions League quarter final, building a possession heavy side in the process. Sporting have also won the last three meetings between these clubs without conceding and the longer historical picture tells much the same story.
Without meaningful pre season data you have to go off what each club looked like at the end of last season. Estrela were compact and cautious, the profile of a side scrapping to stay up, whereas Sporting were a different proposition entirely.
Estrela will be without defender Stefan Leković, who is suspended, while Rodrigo Pinho leads the attack with Leandro Antonetti alongside him. Sporting are managing Zeno Debast through a leg issue and João Simões won't return until late August after a metatarsal fracture. Estrela are expected to line up in a 4-3-3 while Sporting go with their usual 4-2-3-1, with Francisco Trincão operating as the no.10 behind Luis Suárez.
Pepa's 4-3-3 is built around structure and midfield discipline. The plan against Sporting will probably be to stay compact and crowd the central areas, hoping Pinho or Antonetti can catch Sporting exposed on the counter when they push their full backs forward. It's a reasonable approach but not an easy one to execute against a Borges side that presses as aggressively as they did throughout last season and looks for Trincão and Suárez to exploit the space between Estrela's defensive and midfield lines. The battle between Morten Hjulmand and Estrela's midfield three will determine whether Estrela can stay competitive past the opening half hour, if Hjulmand is comfortable on the ball, Sporting will control possession from the opening minutes.
Estrela's best chance of a goal will come from dead balls, though Sporting create from wide deliveries going forward and also give up chances when opponents deliver early balls into their box, which complicates even that option.
Sporting to win 3-0, though Estrela may keep it goalless for the first twenty minutes or so before Hjulmand settles in midfield and the goals arrive, with Trincão and Suárez finding space that Estrela's midfield simply cannot close.
