Sporting CP host FC Alverca at the Estádio José Alvalade on 22 August 2026 and on paper this is about as lopsided as Primeira Liga gets. Sporting sit second after two matches while Alverca are already 13th, still finding their feet after promotion. Rui Borges will want a statement win here, Sérgio Ferreira will be doing well to leave Alvalade with anything at all and avoid fast tracking Alverca straight back to the lower divisions.
Borges and Ferreira haven't met as head coaches before. Borges took charge on 26 December 2024, replacing João Pereira during a turbulent few weeks at Alvalade after Rúben Amorim's departure, while Ferreira arrived on 1 July 2026 after Custódio's single season stint ended at Alverca.
Sporting arrive having beaten Vitória Guimarães 3-2 on 14 August and drawn 2-2 away at Estrela da Amadora on 8 August, though conceding four across those two games is worth noting before they face a side that put five past Alverca last season. Alverca drew 2-2 at Estrela da Amadora on 15 August before losing 0-2 at Porto on 9 August, which shows they can hold their own against similarly ranked sides but that Porto took them apart without much fuss. Alverca will almost certainly try to catch Sporting on the counter here and that is not a completely hopeless plan.
Sporting are without João Simões and Nuno Santos through injury, while Fotis Ioannidis and Georgios Vagiannidis are both doubtful with knocks and Geny Catamo, Sporting's most likely starter on the right flank, is fit. Alverca's situation is considerably worse: Chiquinho is suspended for the second of three matches after a violent conduct ban, handing Marco Essimi a start on the wing, while Sabit Abdulai and Julián Martínez are both injured and Bastien Meupiyou is doubtful. The squad was already thin and losing three regular starters ahead of a trip to Alvalade leaves Ferreira with almost no margin.
Sporting tend to line up in a 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-3 and while losing Simões and Santos is a setback, Borges has the depth to hold the same shape without any real drop in intensity. Catamo will probably drift inside from the right to create overloads against Alverca's back three and whoever leads the line (Ioannidis if fit, otherwise a replacement) will press the centre backs relentlessly. Alverca will almost certainly sit in a deep defensive shape and look to break quickly but with Chiquinho gone, Essimi has to provide the width in transition alone. The decisive battleground is Catamo versus Alverca's wing backs and if he wins his one on ones, Sporting can switch play quickly to exploit whatever gaps the suspended Chiquinho would normally have covered.
Sporting lose some set piece delivery without Santos but their forward options are unaffected by the absentees, whereas Alverca are in a worse spot having to cope without three starters on a squad that had little depth to spare and their bench offers little cover if they lose a midfielder or wing back to fatigue. Expect Sporting to pull away after the hour, when Alverca's limited substitutes will struggle to match the home side's fresh legs. Sporting have also been utterly dominant in recent meetings, beating Alverca 5-1, 4-1 and 2-0 across the 2025/26 season and nothing about Alverca's start to this campaign suggests it has narrowed.
The press should win Sporting the ball high up the pitch often enough that they don't need prolonged build up to create chances. Alverca's plan is long balls and second ball wins in midfield but Chiquinho's absence hurts their delivery from wide set pieces. Sporting lose a little without Santos on dead balls too, though they still have enough aerial presence to cause Alverca's three centre backs real problems.
We're going 4-1 to Sporting and it could be more convincing than that if Alverca's legs go early. The possession game and press should produce plenty of chances and once Alverca's substitutes are on and their structure loosens, Sporting should add to the lead quickly. Catamo and the forward line have enough between them to unpick a deep defence and with three starters missing, Alverca are unlikely to hold their shape for ninety minutes. They might snatch a late goal on the counter, though a consolation goal will matter little when Sporting put five past them last season.
