ELO head-to-head

How Sporting Lisbon and Vitoria Guimaraes compare on rating, form and history.

Sporting CP host Vitoria Guimaraes at the Estadio Jose Alvalade on 14 August 2026 in Round 2 of the Primeira Liga, already in recovery mode after a 2-2 draw at Estrela Amadora on matchday one. Vitoria arrive in worse shape, having lost 1-0 at home to Arouca on the same weekend.

The most interesting factor here has nothing to do with form. Rui Borges managed Vitoria before taking the Sporting job in December 2024, which means he has an unusually intimate read on their shape and where they can be hurt. It is considerably harder to spring a tactical surprise on a manager who spent a year building the system you are trying to hide behind.

Sporting are without Ibrahima Ba, Zeno Debast and Joao Simoes until at least the end of August, with Salvador Blopa also sidelined through a muscle injury. Vitoria's problems are comparably awkward: long term cruciate casualty Gui remains out and Telmo Arcanjo's hamstring recovery is still uncertain. Both sides are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1, with Sporting deploying Rui Silva behind Vagiannidis, Quaresma, Inacio and Rodrigo Dias and Vitoria starting Zych behind Maga, Balieiro, Rivas and Joao Mendes.

Tactically, the most likely mechanisms for Sporting are Catamo driving at full backs from the left and Zalazar finding pockets behind Vitoria's midfield line. Inacio carrying the ball out from the back should pull that screen out of position and open lanes in behind, at which point Fotis Ioannidis becomes the problem for Rivas and Balieiro to solve. The complicating detail for Vitoria is that Borges already knows exactly where those defensive seams are, which makes it very difficult for their coaching staff to paper them over during the game.

Sporting's record across more than 130 meetings stands at around 80 wins to Vitoria's 22 and recent results have done nothing to close that gap, with 5-1 and 4-1 scorelines among them and Sporting having scored first in nine consecutive head to head meetings. The fixture has cleared 2.5 goals in the majority of recent encounters and Vitoria will need to be exceptionally well organised from dead ball situations to limit the damage.

Sporting CP to win 3-0, with Borges's knowledge of Vitoria's defensive shape, combined with the quality Ioannidis and Catamo bring in the final third, making it genuinely hard to see where the visitors find a goal.
