Hearts vs Rangers Prediction: Vrancken's Attack Faces McInnes' Pragmatic Rangers

Tactical breakdown and score prediction for the Scottish Premiership clash between Hearts and Rangers at Tynecastle on 28 October 2026.

How Hearts and Rangers compare on rating, form and history.

Hearts host Rangers at Tynecastle on 28 October 2026 in Scottish Premiership Gameweek 11, with third placed Hearts and second placed Rangers both eyeing the European qualification spots behind Celtic. Rangers arrive with a four point cushion and the intention to extend it, while Hearts have built enough of a home record to make that difficult.

There is a storyline that will get plenty of attention before kick off: Wouter Vrancken replaced Derek McInnes at Hearts on 25 June 2026, while McInnes had taken charge at Rangers just eight days earlier on 17 June. The man who used to manage at Tynecastle is now coming back with the away side, which adds spice to a fixture that didn't need any.

Rangers come in off a 4-0 win over St Johnstone on 24 October, Hearts off a 2-0 win at Motherwell the following day. Rangers sit second on 23 points from 10 games while Hearts are third on 19 and the four point gap is what this match is really about.

Both squads are badly depleted, though the injury situation hits Hearts harder. They are missing Craig Halkett (Achilles), Harry Milne (ACL), Blair Spittal (ankle), Tom Renaud (ankle), Ageu (muscle), Oisin McEntee (calf) and Christian Borchgrevink (hamstring), with Stuart Findlay doubtful through a groin problem, stripping out almost their entire defensive spine. Rangers are without Youssef Chermiti (ACL, long term), José Cifuentes (knee), Lawrence Shankland (hamstring), Cameron Devlin (hamstring), Daisuke Yokota (groin surgery) and Ross McCrorie.

Shankland is the most consequential absentee, having scored more league goals this season than Ryan Naderi and offering a sharper threat against a defence short of its first choice pairing. Naderi carries that responsibility with five league goals, supported by Kevin Kelsy and Min-su Kim.

Vrancken's Hearts want to play forward, press high and use James Wilson, Cláudio Braga, Josh McPake and Calvin Miller who pull wide and invite overlaps, though with their defensive corps shredded by injury, every attack carries the risk of leaving space that Rangers can punish on the counter. McInnes has built Rangers around midfield control through Nicolas Raskin and Dan Neil, with quick transitions designed to find Naderi in behind when the opposition is undermanned at the back. Whether Hearts can bypass that midfield screen before Rangers spring the counter is the central question of the game and given the injury situation, the answer probably favours the visitors.

Hearts beat Rangers 2-1 at Tynecastle in May 2026 but Rangers look a more cohesive unit now following McInnes' arrival and the squad additions made since, which limits how much weight that result can carry into this one.

Hearts' defensive organisation from set pieces is a vulnerability with Halkett gone and Findlay doubtful and the extra burden falls on Naderi and Kelsy to convert the chances Rangers create in open play, while Raskin and Neil's midfield control through 90 minutes will matter more than usual given how many bodies both teams are missing.

Prediction: Hearts 1-2 Rangers. Raskin and Neil sitting in front of the back four should limit the space Hearts' wide players need to operate in and when Hearts do lose the ball, Rangers' counter transition threat is real given Naderi's finishing. The pace of Hearts' wide players pulling out wide and the pressure of European qualification will make this uncomfortable in spells but a win puts Rangers seven clear of Hearts and within reach of Celtic and that is the context McInnes will use to focus his side.
