St Johnstone host Kilmarnock at McDiarmid Park on 2 August 2026, the opening fixture of the 2026-27 Scottish Premiership season. Saints are back in the top flight after winning the 2025-26 Championship with 77 points and a +42 goal difference, while Kilmarnock arrive off a 10th place finish. Both sides start on zero, which sounds like it strips the game of stakes but the opposite is closer to the truth: for a newly promoted side, early Premiership points matter more than they do in February and Kilmarnock know from bitter experience how quickly a soft start can snowball.
Simo Valakari took charge of Saints in October 2024 after arriving from Riga and has extended his contract until 2029, working with assistant Jordi Aluja, whereas Neil McCann was appointed Kilmarnock manager in January 2026 on a deal running through 2027-28, with Billy Dodds alongside him. The two have never met in competitive football, so neither side can draw on an established pattern going in.
Saints dominated the Championship last season and carried some of that momentum into pre-season and the League Cup winning their first two group games before losing to Inverness CT and going out on penalties to East Fife to finish third in their group. Kilmarnock closed the previous season with four wins from four to stave off relegation, then topped their League Cup group unbeaten with two wins and two draws. Neither side has a Premiership result to point to yet, so in terms of league form this is about as blank a canvas as you get.
No notable injury or suspension concerns have emerged for either club. Saints are expected to line up with Toby Steward in goal behind a back four of Liam Smith, Zach Mitchell, Cheick Diabate and Matty Foulds, with Jason Holt and Reece McAlear anchoring midfield and Logan Chalmers, Sam Stanton and Jamie Gullan supporting Ruari Paton up front. Kilmarnock look set to go with Max Stryjek behind Michael Schjønning-Larsen, Robbie Deas, Ethan Brown and James Bowie, with Erik Ring, Bailey Rice, Mark O'Hara and Greg Kiltie in midfield and Tyreece John-Jules alongside Joe Hugill leading the line.
The central tactical question is whether McAlear and Holt can cope with the numbers McCann throws at them in Rice, O'Hara, Ring and Kiltie. Kilmarnock leaned heavily on set-pieces during their survival run last season and if that four man midfield wins the second balls, Hugill and John-Jules become far more dangerous for the Saints backline than a 10th place finish might suggest. Kilmarnock have the better of recent history as well, winning four of the last six Premiership meetings with Saints and their most recent visit to McDiarmid Park ended 2-0 in their favour.
Opening day Premiership fixtures in Scotland tend to reward the side that manages the game rather than opens it up and Kilmarnock's set-piece threat gives them a clear mechanism for doing damage without needing to dominate. Paton is a genuine threat in the channels for Saints but Kilmarnock's head to head record and their unbeaten League Cup group campaign make McCann's side the marginal favourites to take a point. A 1-1 draw looks the most likely result.
