Early La Liga fixtures rarely carry this level of tension but Celta Vigo's visit to Real Sociedad on 3 September 2026 feels genuinely loaded. Both clubs are in the lower half after five matches, with Sociedad 13th on three points and Celta 17th with just one and a home side desperate to build on their first league win of the season meets an away side still searching for theirs.
Pellegrino Matarazzo replaced Sergio Francisco in December 2025, while Claudio Giráldez has been in charge of Celta since March 2024 following Rafa Benitez's departure. There is little head to head history between them at managerial level.

Iago Aspas is Celta's sole goalscorer this season and his positioning and vision could punish any lapse in Sociedad's midfield press. If Remiro cannot go, an alternative goalkeeper will change how Sociedad build from restarts, adding another layer of uncertainty to their defensive structure.
Sociedad have the better of this rivalry historically, with around 61 wins to Celta's 43 and they come into this unbeaten in recent meetings having claimed the reverse fixture earlier in 2026. Matarazzo's Copa del Rey win in 2025/26 is at least evidence that this squad can close out a game when they need to, though three points are essential with Sociedad still near the bottom six weeks in. Giráldez needs a result here and is unlikely to set up to contain, though converting chances without Iglesias remains the obvious problem his side have not yet solved.
We're going for 2-2. Sociedad's home organisation and Oyarzabal's movement should allow them to take the lead but Celta's press and Aspas's creativity are likely to produce equalisers, particularly if the absences of Odriozola and a potentially unavailable Remiro leave momentary gaps in Sociedad's defensive shape. Both managers have reasons to push rather than park, which makes a scrappy draw the most honest conclusion available from the evidence.
