Southampton host Bolton Wanderers at St Mary's on 17 October 2026, knowing a win would tighten their grip on a top six spot despite the four point Spygate deduction. Bolton arrive looking for a third straight away Championship win, having beaten Wolves 3-1 last Tuesday.
Direct meetings between Tonda Eckert and Steven Schumacher are limited. Schumacher worked alongside Finn Azaz during their shared spell at Plymouth, though beyond that shared history it is hard to say with confidence what he specifically learned about the player. Eckert, appointed on 5 December 2025 as Will Still's replacement, has built a clear possession based identity at the club, whereas Schumacher, who took over from Ian Evatt on 30 January 2025, prefers to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting quickly on the break - precisely what Bolton did when they went to Wolves last week and came away with three goals.

Southampton come into this on the back of four wins from their last five, including a 1-0 win at Norwich on 14 October and a 1-0 home win over Portsmouth three days before that, sitting seventh after ten games with 21 goals scored and ten conceded before the deduction was applied. Bolton's form is more mixed, with three wins from their last five, though the Wolves result is the one that matters most in terms of confidence.
Southampton are without Flynn Downes, still sidelined with an ankle injury, though Cameron Bragg returns from suspension and could slot into midfield. Bolton lose Chris Forino to a groin injury, costing them aerial presence at the back.
Southampton press high and build through possession, with Finn Azaz as the creative hub and James Ward-Prowse responsible for most of their delivery from set pieces. Cyle Larin leads the line with around seven goals so far. Without Downes, Eckert will probably ask Ward-Prowse to sit a bit deeper to cover ground in midfield, giving Azaz more freedom to operate between the lines. Bolton line up in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 depending on the game, fielding Sam Dalby up front alongside Atsuki Ito, Josh Sheehan and Ethan Erhahon in midfield, with Erhahon anchoring and Sheehan and Ito pushing forward. With Forino absent, Southampton will likely target the back line through Larin and Ward-Prowse's delivery at corners.
The Azaz against Erhahon duel is probably the game's most interesting matchup, with Azaz looking to receive between the lines and turn and Erhahon tasked with preventing exactly that. If Azaz gets time on the ball, Southampton can open the game up, if Erhahon and Ito win those exchanges, Dalby has the pace and movement to punish on the break. Southampton are unbeaten at home in the league this season, Bolton sat deep at Wolves and waited and you would expect the same approach here. Downes' absence may cost Southampton physicality in the middle and if Ito in particular exploits that space, Bolton have a route into this game.
This is the first league meeting between these clubs since 2005 and the Saints have gone seven consecutive league meetings against Bolton without a win.
Ward-Prowse's delivery is Southampton's biggest dead ball weapon and with Forino out Bolton may shift to zonal marking at corners, which could open up the near post for Larin or a late arriving substitute. Dalby and Sheehan are Bolton's own set piece dangers and Forino's absence does nothing to diminish that. Southampton's press should force hurried clearances and win them set pieces, which suits their game far more than Bolton's.

Southampton need three points to keep pressure on the automatic spots, whereas Bolton, who have just put three past Wolves away from home, are here to show that result was no fluke.
Southampton 2-1 Bolton. Azaz between the lines and Ward-Prowse pulling the strings from deep should be enough to break Bolton down, though Dalby getting on the end of a Sheehan delivery late on feels like the likeliest way back into it for the visitors.
