Detailed tactical preview and 2-1 score prediction for Fulham vs Hull City in Premier League Matchweek 7 on 17 October 2026.

How Fulham and Hull City compare on rating, form and history.

Fulham host Hull City at Craven Cottage on 17 October 2026 knowing anything less than three points will only deepen the pressure on a side stuck at the bottom of the Premier League table. Two points from six games, no wins yet and a newly promoted side sitting eighth: Fulham's situation is bad without needing embellishment. Hull, meanwhile, arrive having exceeded just about everyone's expectations and this is precisely the kind of game where they could make it seven matches without a win for Arbeloa's side.

Alvaro Arbeloa and Sergej Jakirovic have never met as managers, so Saturday's match will be their first direct tactical test against each other. Fulham arrive winless after six Premier League matches, their latest setback a 1-2 defeat at Ipswich Town on 10 October 2026, a game they led late before conceding again in what is becoming an uncomfortable pattern. They have two draws and four losses from those six fixtures and sit 20th, whereas Hull drew 2-2 with Everton on 11 October 2026 to stay eighth on nine points, with two wins and three draws from their opening six.

Arbeloa, appointed on 7 July 2026 after replacing Marco Silva, is managing around two notable absences: Antonee Robinson is doubtful with an ankle or foot problem, while Tom Cairney is uncertain due to knee and fitness concerns. Robinson's potential absence is the more consequential of the two, since whoever fills in at left back is unlikely to offer the same overlapping presence. Hull's injury list is another matter entirely, with Jack Butland, Eliot Matazo, Ilyas Ansah, Matt Targett, Darko Gyabi, Charlie Hughes and Nobel Mendy all ruled out and Mohamed-Ali Cho and Lucas Gourna-Douath listed as doubts. Belloumi has filled much of the void with three goals and two assists across six appearances.

Fulham typically dominate possession and have done so across all six games this season but they have struggled badly to turn that control into goals and have shown a troubling habit of losing concentration late in games when it matters most. Joshua King leads the attack with two goals, Alex Iwobi operates in the space behind the striker and Gonzalo Garcia and Oscar Bobb provide width on either flank. Without Robinson at left back, whoever steps in is unlikely to provide the same attacking outlet down that side.

Hull line up in a 5-4-1 or 3-5-2 and have already taken points from games where they were expected to lose. Mohamed Belloumi is their most dangerous player, linking well with Oli McBurnie up front and arriving late into areas where he can do damage. Matt Crooks and Regan Slater sit as the midfield pairing and Jakirovic will likely keep his narrow block in place and look to release Belloumi or McBurnie when Fulham lose the ball.

The individual battle that will shape this most is Iwobi against Belloumi. If Iwobi can pick the ball up in the gap between Hull's midfield four and their back five, Fulham should create enough to win. If Belloumi can exploit the space down the right channel that Robinson would ordinarily cover, Hull will have real opportunity to hurt Fulham on the break. Fulham's recurring habit of conceding late means they remain vulnerable even when ahead and Hull have shown enough composure to stay in games until those moments arrive.

Fulham have historically had the better of this series with six wins to Hull's three and one draw, the last meeting being the FA Cup third round in January 2023, which Fulham won 2-0, making it four consecutive wins in the fixture.

Fulham have repeatedly conceded from dead ball situations and after losing momentum in the final quarter of games, so Hull's set piece delivery warrants attention even with several defenders unavailable. Fulham need to be better in those closing minutes than they were at Ipswich if they want to avoid throwing away another lead. Fulham will have the ball, Hull will sit and wait. The home side's pressing need for a first win will push them forward early, though Hull have already demonstrated they can hold shape under pressure and take something from games like this.

We are going with a 2-1 Fulham win. King, Garcia and Bobb should create enough against a reshuffled Hull back line, with King or Garcia the likeliest scorers, though Hull's set piece and counter attacking threat means Fulham are unlikely to keep a clean sheet.
