How Espanyol and Atletico Madrid compare on rating, form and history.

La Liga Matchday 9 brings Espanyol and Atletico Madrid together on 17 October 2026 with very different things riding on it. Espanyol sit 12th on eight points from eight games, not quite far enough clear of the lower half for comfort, while Atletico occupy second place on 19 points, just five behind leaders Barcelona and riding a five match winning run across league and Champions League.

Manolo González has managed Espanyol since 12 March 2024 and Diego Simeone has been at Atletico since 23 December 2011, though the two haven't faced each other often enough to draw any meaningful conclusions from their direct record.

Espanyol arrive in patchy form with just one win in their last five outings, bracketed by a 1-1 draw with Málaga on 9 October and a 1-3 loss to Elche earlier that month. Atletico, by contrast, have won all five of their most recent matches, including a 2-1 win over Alavés on 10 October and a 2-0 Champions League victory against Manchester United around 13 October.

Espanyol will be without Jofre Carreras (groin) and Kike García (hamstring) and both Marko Dmitrović and Andoni Gorosabel are carrying injuries that leave them doubtful. Losing Carreras and García is the more damaging of those absences, leaving the forward line thinner and less direct than González would want. Atletico report no injury concerns, giving Simeone a full squad to rotate from as he sees fit.

Espanyol line up in a 4-2-3-1 built around staying compact, absorbing pressure and breaking quickly, with Roberto Fernández, already on six goals this season, as the engine of those transitions, Edu Expósito anchoring midfield and Leandro Cabrera organising the back line. Without Carreras and García the attack loses its directness and aerial presence, so Espanyol will rely heavily on set piece routines and Fernández finding moments through Expósito's service.

Atletico operate with intense pressing and a compact defensive block while shifting between a 4-4-2 and 4-2-3-1 depending on the game state and they are at their most dangerous in transition. Julián Álvarez leads the line with Ademola Lookman and Jonathan David in support, while Pablo Barrios has been the standout midfielder, breaking play quickly and releasing Álex Baena, who drives forward through early vertical passes to open space between the lines.

The midfield battle between Barrios and Expósito is where this game may be decided. If Barrios wins second balls and gets Baena or Lookman moving early, Atletico's transitions could cut Espanyol open repeatedly, whereas if Expósito and Cabrera keep their shape, Espanyol have enough to frustrate the visitors and steal something from a set piece through Fernández.

Espanyol won 2-1 at home in August 2025, though Atletico responded with a 4-2 victory in February 2026 and across the last ten meetings Atletico hold the overall edge with four wins to Espanyol's one, the rest ending level.

Espanyol's compact shape makes them a threat at set pieces, particularly through Fernández and that may be their most realistic route to something here. Atletico need to keep winning to stay on Barcelona's shoulder, Espanyol need points to stay clear of the bottom end of the table and those competing pressures should produce a tighter game than the standings suggest. Espanyol have taken two wins from four home games at RCDE Stadium this season, so the visitors won't have it entirely their own way.

Atletico Madrid to win 2-1. With a full squad available, Simeone can press high and rotate without losing quality. Barrios driving Atletico's transitions makes them hard to contain and they should move in front through a clinical counter before Espanyol pull one back late from a dead ball.
