How Racing Santander and Espanyol compare on rating, form and history.

Matchweek 10 of La Liga throws together two sides still finding their feet back in the top flight. Racing Santander sit 17th with eight points from nine games, one place below Espanyol, who are 16th on the same tally. Both clubs earned promotion in recent seasons and are now doing something rather familiar: trying not to go straight back down, with the bottom half already congested enough that Saturday's game at El Sardinero on 24 October 2026 carries genuine stakes.

José Alberto López and Manolo González have never faced each other before, with López at Racing since 13 December 2022 and González having taken charge of Espanyol on 12 March 2024 after replacing Luis Miguel Ramis.

Both sides share the same sequence across their last five matches: loss, draw, loss, loss, win. For Racing that means a 0-2 defeat to Osasuna, a 2-2 draw with Valencia, a 0-5 thrashing at Celta Vigo, a 2-7 horror at Barcelona and then a 2-1 home win over Alavés. Espanyol lost 0-1 to Atlético Madrid, drew 1-1 with Málaga, lost 1-3 at Elche, fell 1-2 to Rayo Vallecano and beat Osasuna 2-0, a sequence that tells you everything you need to know about how settled either side currently is.

Racing will be without Simon Eriksson, sidelined by a shoulder injury, while Manu Hernando is a doubt with physical discomfort, leaving José Alberto López to reshuffle his back line and potentially turn to less experienced options in central defence. Espanyol's situation is worse still: Kike García is out long term with a hamstring problem not expected to clear until around January 2027, Bryan Zaragoza misses the trip through a knee issue, Jofre Carreras is ruled out until around 26 October with a pubic bone and groin complaint and Javi Puado is absent after an ACL injury. That is a significant chunk of attacking width and forward options gone in one go, which pushes Manolo González toward set pieces and counter attacks as his primary threats.

Racing typically line up in a 4-2-3-1, pushing their defensive line high and pressing aggressively in front of their own fans. The problem is that approach has been punished badly: 25 goals conceded in nine league games is a shocking number and the 0-5 at Celta and 2-7 at Barcelona were not flukes so much as symptoms of a structural vulnerability at the back. Yassir Zabiri, their top scorer, will look to exploit the space behind Espanyol's midfield, with Iñigo Vicente providing creativity from the left and Sergio Canales offering composure and a long range threat through the middle.

Espanyol come with a different temperament entirely. Roberto Fernández takes on greater importance with so many forwards missing, needing to hold the ball up, link with the deeper lying Javi Hernández and win his aerial duels when Racing go long. The most interesting individual battle is Zabiri against a depleted Espanyol defence, while Hernández's ability to cut off Vicente's supply line could be just as decisive.

Set pieces are likely Espanyol's clearest route to goal given their forward absentees and Racing have shown they are vulnerable from crosses and second balls. Home advantage at El Sardinero gives Racing territory but their defensive record suggests a clean sheet is probably beyond them even when they are on top of the game.

The prediction here is a 2-1 win for Espanyol. Racing will create chances through Zabiri and Vicente and will likely score once but the absences of Eriksson and potentially Hernando leave their back line in a state that Espanyol's set piece threat should be able to exploit. Fernández looks a good bet to score, with a second likely arriving from a set piece or a counter after Racing push bodies forward chasing an equaliser. Espanyol have conceded far fewer than Racing's 25 league goals this season and Racing have conceded in every league game they have played - that contrast does not need dressing up.
