Inter Miami host New York City FC at Chase Stadium on 14 October 2026, sitting second in the Eastern Conference on 49 points from 28 games with a top seed and home advantage through the postseason still within reach. NYCFC are tenth on 33 points with six matches left and need something here to stop their playoff hopes from fading entirely.
Cristian 'Kily' Gonzalez, who replaced interim coach Guillermo Hoyos on 15 September 2026, faces Pascal Jansen in what is still a very short head to head, with Jansen himself only in the role since January 2025 after replacing Nick Cushing.

Inter Miami arrive having won just once in their last five but that win was a 4-0 demolition of DC United on 11 October in which both Messi and Suárez scored. NYCFC have not won in their last three matches, the most recent a 2-1 defeat to Chicago Fire on 10 October despite leading at halftime, exactly the kind of late collapse that has come to define their difficult run.
Inter Miami are missing four players: Yannick Bright (foot), Facundo Mura (ankle), Mateo Silvetti (shoulder) and Tadeo Allende (knee). NYCFC's list is far longer, with Keaton Parks, Kai Trewin, Maxi Moralez, Arnau Farnos, Drew Baiera and Talles Magno all out with leg injuries and Mitja Ilenic unavailable through a combination of illness and a leg problem, leaving Jansen without seven players for the trip to Chase Stadium.
Losing Bright removes the defensive midfielder who most reliably screened the back line and Mura's absence weakens the right flank, so Gonzalez will lean even more heavily on Messi dropping deep to orchestrate and Suárez testing central defenders with movement in behind. Rodrigo De Paul and Casemiro are carrying more defensive weight in the middle as a result and whether either is disciplined enough positionally to absorb that extra responsibility without leaving gaps is the thing worth watching.
NYCFC are more structured, pressing when they can and leaning on transitions but losing Parks, Moralez and five other midfielders and defenders means Jansen must ask a great deal from younger or less experienced players against Miami's front line. Nicolas Fernandez Mercau is their top scorer this season, supported by Agustin Ojeda's creativity and Hannes Wolf's forward runs and if NYCFC are going to hurt Miami it will run through those three. Their absentees also thin out any dead ball threat NYCFC might otherwise carry, so Miami will look to exploit that imbalance through Messi's precision from set plays.

Messi's ability to create space will be tested against whatever defensive organisation NYCFC can still put together and Suárez's movement in behind will trouble a back line missing multiple experienced players. Miami have won the last two meetings convincingly, 3-2 away in March 2026 and 5-1 at home in November 2025, which tells you roughly what the ceiling looks like here. When Miami push numbers forward, De Paul and Casemiro need to stay compact because if they get dragged wide, Mercau and Ojeda have the space they need.
We're predicting a 2-1 for Miami. Messi and Suárez against a defence missing seven players is about as good as it gets for Miami and if NYCFC score it will most likely come through Mercau on the break or an Ojeda set piece. The injury imbalance and the form gap point clearly enough in one direction.
